New Delhi: Police arrested Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi, and MPs and leaders of INDIA alliance parties, who were protesting in Delhi demanding the resignation of the Chief Election Commissioner.
Members of the INDIA alliance staged a sit-in protest inside the Akashvani परिसर today (Tuesday). Rahul Gandhi said they wanted to meet Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. However, permission for that meeting was not granted.
Following this, Rahul said that their protest would continue. He also said that if protesting inside the Akashvani premises is a problem for the police, they should be allowed to protest elsewhere.
As police continued negotiations, they did not yield any result. In this situation, around 8 o’clock, MPs including Rahul Gandhi and leaders of the INDIA alliance parties were removed from the Akashvani premises. When Rahul refused, he was forcibly removed and put into a van. Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi was with him.
In another vehicle, MPs and leaders from other parties were loaded. K.C. Venugopal, Amrinder Singh, Pawan Khera, and Deepender Hooda were also arrested.
Earlier, Rahul Gandhi, who said that more than 300 MPs wanted to meet Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar but were being denied permission, questioned what democracy means if the Election Commission does not meet MPs who represent the people.
Earlier today, opposition parties including the Congress and the Samajwadi Party held a march in Delhi, demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The march began from the Parliament complex toward the Election Commission office. More than 300 MPs took part, including Congress leader and Rajya Sabha Opposition Leader Mallikarjun Kharge, Lok Sabha Opposition Leader Rahul Gandhi, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, and Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi.

In view of this march, security was tightened in the Election Commission office area. A large number of police personnel were deployed, and numerous barricades were put up.

Rahul Gandhi, Akhilesh Yadav, and others who tried to enter the Election Commission office premises were stopped. This led to tension there. Following this, Rahul and opposition leaders staged a protest at the Akashvani परिसर, located about 100 meters away from the Election Commission office area.
They said that they wanted to meet Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. However, the Election Commission has stated that no political party has contacted them regarding this meeting.
