New Delhi: The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has clarified that a 0.4% MDR fee will not be charged for UPI auto-pay transactions. At the same time, it has said that there will be a small charge.
The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has announced that a 0.4% fee (MDR) will be levied on business-related UPI transactions above Rs. 2,000 from October 15.
In this context, in the statement issued by NPCI regarding whether MDR charges will be levied on monthly payments made through the UPI AutoPay method, it said, “There is a key difference between the regular UPI payment method used for business purposes and the AutoPay method. Therefore, the automatic payment method has been exempted from this new MDR structure.
For example, if a user has an OTT subscription of Rs. 2,500 per month and has authorized payment through UPI auto-pay, that amount will be collected automatically. It has been stated that the new MDR structure for certain high-value merchant UPI transactions does not mean the user must suddenly pay an additional 0.4% just because the recurring payment exceeds Rs. 2,000.
What is AutoPay?
UPI Autopay is a system that authorizes a merchant or service provider to automatically collect a specified amount from users’ bank accounts at regular intervals. It can be used for electricity and mobile bill payments, monthly installments, insurance premiums, OTT subscriptions, and mutual fund transactions.
