Assembly elections are set to be held soon in Punjab and Uttar Pradesh. In Uttar Pradesh, the Congress party is in alliance with the Samajwadi Party. Congress has been saying that it should be allotted 150 seats in this election. As a first step to face the election, the Congress leadership has appointed new leaders for both states. In Punjab, hockey legend Pargat Singh, and in Uttar Pradesh, Aradhana Misra Mona, have been appointed as leaders.
These two alone will lead the party in the assembly election to be held next year.
Friendship with Akhilesh Yadav.!
Mona, who has been elected three times as an MLA from Uttar Pradesh’s Rampur Khas constituency, is the daughter of Rajya Sabha MP Pramod Tiwari. Mona has been appointed in place of Ajay Rai, who had been the Congress’s Uttar Pradesh president since 2023. Mona and her father are both considered close to Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav.

The Samajwadi Party leadership has welcomed the change in the Congress party’s leadership. In an interview given by Mona on this, she said, "We will confront the government by focusing on the BJP’s failures, whether it is the SIR issue, unemployment, law and order, or inflation. In 2027, the BJP government will be removed and an INDIA alliance government will be formed in Uttar Pradesh," she said. Lok Sabha MP Imran Masood was appointed as the Uttar Pradesh working president, and Devendra Nishad and Alok Prasad were appointed as vice presidents of the state unit.
Two days ago, Punjab Congress president Amarinder Raja Singh Warring resigned from the post of Punjab Congress president after a bitter clash with former Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi. Following this, Jat Sikh face Bhagat Singh, who was in the Shiromani Akali Dal 10 years ago, has been appointed as the state Congress president.
Bargat Singh was a hockey player. Bargat Singh took part when the Indian hockey team participated in the Olympics in 1992 and 1996. Bargat Singh clashed with the Akali Dal leadership in 2016. Following this, after being suspended from the Shiromani Akali Dal party that same year, he directly attacked the functioning of the party president Sukhbir Singh Badal and wrote a letter to Badal. After that, he left the party and joined the Congress. In 2020, Bargat Singh sent a letter to then Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh questioning the functioning of the Congress government.
In that letter, he had expressed concerns about the decline in corruption cases, the drug menace, revenue leakage, sand and liquor operations, and the continued influence of the Badal family’s transport business. This change in leadership has been made at a time when internal party conflict in Punjab has been intensifying.

Several senior leaders, including senior leader Sunny, were unhappy with Amarinder Singh continuing as the party’s president, having served as the party’s state president since 2022.
It is said that this leadership change has taken place based on the report submitted to the party leadership by Punjab Congress in-charges Sachin Pilot and Bhupesh Baghel after they studied the matter. The Aam Aadmi Party has already suffered a setback in Delhi. Therefore, the party will fight to retain Punjab. So it is said that Birkat Singh has been appointed as the leader, recognizing the need for a neutral leader to fight against it.
