A review meeting on the precautionary measures to be taken regarding the northeast monsoon in Nellai district was held at the District Collector’s office under the chairmanship of Finance Minister and district in-charge minister Marywilson.
Officials from all departments participated in it. The minister inquired about the measures to be taken to face the monsoon and the steps that have already been taken.
Earlier, the Minister inaugurated 18 completed project works worth Rs. 17.67 crore and distributed welfare assistance worth Rs. 7.43 crore to 1,816 beneficiaries. Subsequently, the Minister also visited and inspected the disaster control room.
Later, in a press interview, he said that in Nellai district too, all safety measures to face the monsoon have been intensified at full scale. Taking the highest rainfall recorded in 2023 as the benchmark, precautionary works have been planned on a war footing. The government’s foremost goal is to ensure that the public does not suffer any untoward incident or loss of life under any circumstances.
Tirunelveli district has been divided into 5 zones, and one IAS officer has been appointed in charge of each zone. Across the district, 71 areas that are easily vulnerable to rain have been identified. Of these, 7 places—2 in Nellai and 5 in Palayamkottai—have been classified as highly dangerous areas, and instructions have been issued to pay extra attention there.
5,466 volunteers have been given the necessary training and kept ready to provide immediate assistance in affected areas. In addition, fire and rescue operations, sandbags, boats, and generators are ready. Telecommunications companies have been instructed to maintain diesel generators so that telecommunication towers continue to operate even during power outages.
People can contact the toll-free number 1077 for monsoon-related assistance, as well as the Vanakkam Nellai app.
Orders have been issued to immediately inspect and clear the blockages in the Nellai Junction bus stand, the Tirunelveli canal, and the canals carrying surplus water from Nainarkulam. In the corporation, 70% of the underground sewerage project work has been completed. Since the rainy season has begun, orders have been issued to immediately fill the dug-up pits, temporarily level the roads, and promptly repair damaged roads.
A detailed project report has been prepared at an estimated cost of Rs. 1,031 crore to restore the Thamirabarani River and has been sent from the Water Resources Department to the Tamil Nadu Finance Department Secretariat. In response to a question on this, he said, “I do not have information on this. I will ask and let you know.”
