Modern weapons and equipment are being purchased for the Tamil Nadu Police at a cost of Rs. 212.58 crore. The Tamil Nadu government’s Home Department has issued the government order for this.
Various measures are being taken to modernize the Tamil Nadu Police. As part of this, Rs. 212.58 crore has been allocated to provide modern weapons and equipment to the Tamil Nadu Police, and the Home Department has issued a government order.
With this funding, the police department will purchase modern firearms, bomb detection devices, drones, modern patrol vehicles, and more.
Modern weapons: In particular, the Tamil Nadu Special Police Force will procure 12 sniper rifles with day-and-night vision capability, 10 grenade launchers, 30 Bulgarian 7.62 mm assault rifles, 50 rifles, and 10 light machine guns. In addition, 3 ‘Corner Shot’ systems, 50 ‘Glock-17’ pistols, and 50 paintball guns for training will also be purchased.
Modern drones: At a cost of Rs. 1.18 crore, 4 drones equipped with thermal imaging cameras and loudspeaker facilities are being purchased, and 4 advanced drones are being bought for the elite force at a cost of Rs. 2.07 crore.
Rs. 15.67 crore has been allocated to the Thanjavur district police department under the Smart Surveillance Project. With this funding, modern surveillance cameras and drone cameras will be purchased for areas including Kumbakonam, Pattukkottai, and Thiruvaiyaru in that district.
Modern equipment for the bomb disposal unit: For the bomb disposal unit, 7 state-of-the-art bomb suits certified to international standards will be purchased at a cost of Rs. 3.50 crore. In addition, 200 advanced walkie-talkies operating on 4G and 5G frequencies, 50 dash cameras to be fitted in vehicles, artificial intelligence-based surveillance systems, explosive detection devices, and other equipment will also be purchased.
500 new patrol vehicles: To strengthen emergency police services and integrate with the emergency assistance system, 500 new jeeps are being purchased at a cost of Rs. 55 crore. In addition, to enhance the digital forensic capabilities of the CBCID, it is planned to purchase 22 mobile investigation vehicles and modern forensic equipment at a cost of Rs. 22.87 crore.
It is also planned to set up centralized monitoring facilities at 46 cybercrime police stations and 877 police stations across Tamil Nadu at a cost of Rs. 11.59 crore.
Of this fund, a maximum of Rs.99.03 crore has been allocated for communication devices, Rs.55 crore for emergency patrol vehicles, Rs.30.51 crore for surveillance equipment, Rs.11.28 crore for security equipment, and Rs.3.33 crore for weapons procurement.
