Former Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar will lead the opposition parties’ ‘INDI’ alliance’s ‘symbolic impeachment’ event to be held against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar on Friday (Oct. 30), informed sources said.
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge will move the impeachment resolution at the event, and the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha will deliver the concluding address before the resolution is passed, sources said.
Opposition parties have been staging a series of protests, demanding that Gyanesh Kumar resign, accusing him of engaging in electoral malpractice in favor of the BJP through the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voters’ list.
A massive public rally is set to be held on Nov. 1 at Delhi’s Ramlila Maidan on behalf of the INDIA alliance. Two notices already submitted by the opposition in Parliament seeking to bring a motion to remove Gyanesh Kumar from office were rejected.
In this situation, as a prelude to the above rally, the opposition decided to hold a symbolic “impeachment” event against Gyanesh Kumar in public. The Congress, alleging that permission was sought for the event at several places in Delhi, including the Ashoka Hotel, but was not granted, announced that the event would be held at Kharge’s residence on Friday (Oct. 30).
INDIA alliance consultation:
With the aim of finalizing the procedures related to this, a meeting of leaders of the INDIA alliance parties was held at Kharge’s residence on Thursday. Congress general secretaries Priyanka Gandhi, Jairam Ramesh, K.C. Venugopal, former Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar, Trinamool Congress’s Derek O’Brien led by Mamata, Samajwadi Party’s Harendra Malik, Jharkhand Mukti Morcha’s Mahua Maji, and Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader John Brittas were among those who participated.
“Meira Kumar will preside over the impeachment proceedings; Kharge will move the impeachment resolution. Rahul will deliver the concluding address before the resolution is passed,” alliance sources said.
Speaking to reporters in Bengaluru on this, Kharge said, “Our protest against the ‘vote theft’ carried out by the Election Commission will continue. For this, we will hold a model parliamentary session at my residence in Delhi on Friday. We will hold a massive public meeting on Sunday (Nov. 1).”
“At the symbolic dismissal event, all issues related to SIR and ‘vote theft’ will be discussed. Through this, we will expose the people’s anguish and the attack on democracy,” said Lok Sabha Congress group deputy leader Gaurav Gogoi.
