L. Murugan has announced that he will resign from the posts of Union Minister of State and Rajya Sabha member. L. Murugan, who served as the Vice-Chairman of the National Commission for Scheduled Castes from 2017 to 2020, also worked for some years as the in-charge of Kerala state.
He was subsequently appointed as the Tamil Nadu BJP president in 2020. In the 2021 विधानसभा election, he contested from the Dharapuram constituency and lost to DMK candidate Kayalvizhi by a margin of 1,393 votes. In the 2026 विधानसभा election, L. Murugan contested from the Avinashi (reserved) constituency and lost to TVK candidate Kamali by a margin of 15,000 votes.

In the long letter he has written to Prime Minister Modi regarding his resignation, ``Respected Prime Minister Ji, greetings.
Your recent visit to Tamil Nadu has made a deep impression on my mind. At every place, I personally witnessed how warmly the people welcomed you and the confidence your visit inspired in them. Their enthusiasm reflected their sincere faith in the bright future you are striving to create for Tamil Nadu.
I felt proud and grateful to see your dedication to our state and the affection our people show toward you; it has also renewed my resolve to work even harder for Tamil Nadu, our party, and our country.
Serving India and Tamil Nadu under your leadership would be the greatest honor of my life. I do not come from a family with any political background. I come from a very poor family. My parents, who worked as laborers and cattle herders, still live a simple life in Konur village. They could never have imagined that their son would one day serve in the Central Government.

Inspired by the nationalist ideas of Mahakavi Bharathi, Sardar Patel, and Dr. Syama Prasad Mukherjee, I joined the ABVP during my college years. In my nearly thirty-year journey in the ABVP and the BJP, my guiding principle has remained very simple: "Nation first, party next, and self-interest last."
Your leadership and the BJP’s commitment to recognizing grassroots workers gave me opportunities beyond what I had imagined. From serving as the Vice-Chairperson of the National Commission for Scheduled Castes to becoming a Rajya Sabha member twice, and the opportunity to serve in your Union Cabinet, each responsibility is a reflection of the trust you placed in me.
The opportunity to work in the ministries of Information and Broadcasting, Parliamentary Affairs, Fisheries, and Animal Husbandry has broadened my understanding of our country and its people. Over the years, the party also gave me the opportunity to contest in legislative assembly elections and Lok Sabha elections. I had never imagined that so many doors would open for me to serve my country and my party.
During these 5 years of serving in your cabinet, I have seen your patience, compassion, and extraordinary dedication very closely.

Your leadership reflects these lines of Thiruvalluvar
Kodaiyalisengolkudiyombalnaankum udaiyaanaamvendharkkoli.
"The king who possesses the four qualities of generosity, compassion, righteous rule, and the protection of his people is like a light to other kings."
I have personally felt the concern you have for Tamil Nadu. Whether it was an issue affecting our state, the safety of Tamils suffering in war zones, or the welfare of Indian fishermen, whenever I approached you seeking help, you have gone above and beyond to ensure that the matter received urgent attention and a swift resolution.
I am deeply delighted to see the extraordinary transformation you are bringing to Tamil Nadu, from the support you have given to the Chennai Metro project to the expansion of Thoothukudi Port, the widening of our highways, and the redevelopment of 26 railway stations under the 'Amrit Bharat Railway Station Scheme'.
Your support for deep-sea fishing boats for our fishermen, your personal interest in 'deep-tech' ventures emerging from IIT, and the technological initiatives coming out of IIT Madras reflect the care you show for both traditional livelihoods and future opportunities.
I was deeply moved to see how much personal interest you are showing in fulfilling the aspirations of our state.

I can never forget the special affection you showed by coming to my home three times to take part in the Pongal festival celebrations. The love you have for the Tamil language, culture, and civilization has given us immense pride. When you quoted “Yaadhum Oore, Yaavarum Kelir” at the United Nations, you carried the timeless message of Tamil civilization to the world.
The Subramania Bharati Chair at Banaras Hindu University (BHU), Kashi Tamil Sangamam, and Saurashtra Tamil Sangamam have honored Tamil heritage and further strengthened its enduring bond with the other parts of India.
In our meetings, your frequent mention of your love for the Kural shows how deeply you cherish Thiruvalluvar’s teachings. Your recent gift of the Tirukkural to President Putin once again brought that wisdom to the world. The installation of the Sengol in Parliament has secured a special place in our hearts and has also given Tamil Nadu’s heritage a place of honor at the very center of our democracy.
By recognizing Tamil Nadu’s talents and the dedication of its public servants, you have honored Tamil Nadu. Governor responsibilities have been entrusted to senior leaders I have worked closely with, including Mr. L. Ganesan and Mr. C.P. Radhakrishnan, bringing pride to our state and to the contributions they have made to society.

Mr. C.P. Radhakrishnan’s elevation to the post of Vice President has brought even greater pride to Tamil Nadu. Dr. Tamilisai Soundararajan, who held the position before me as state BJP president, was also entrusted with the responsibilities of Governor and Lieutenant Governor.
Mrs. Nirmala Sitharaman, one of India’s longest-serving Finance Ministers, is from Tamil Nadu, and our External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar has a Tamil background. These responsibilities reflect the trust you have placed in Tamil Nadu’s talent and its contribution to the nation.
Your continued recognition of hardworking workers is a source of strength for every party worker. It assures them that, regardless of family background, dedication, perseverance, and service will certainly be recognized.
Prime Minister ji, everything I have received from the party and from your leadership has deepened my sense of responsibility. Your dedication to India, Tamil Nadu, and the BJP makes me feel that I must now devote myself even more fully to the work that first brought me into public life.

Therefore, with a humble and grateful heart, I request that I be relieved of my responsibilities as Union Minister of State and be permitted to resign my Rajya Sabha membership, so that I can devote myself full-time to strengthening the party in Tamil Nadu.
I want to go to every village and every street, meet our people, and stand shoulder to shoulder with our workers to expand the party’s growth across all parts of the state.
I want to take your message of 'Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas' (Together with all, development for all, trust of all) to every person and help every family see its role in the journey toward 'Viksit Bharat' (Developed India).
The affection and trust I witnessed during your recent visit have strengthened my belief that there is still much we need to achieve in Tamil Nadu. I wish to devote all my time and energy to preparing the party for the 2029 Lok Sabha elections, to bringing about another term of government under your leadership, and this time to contributing to a decisive victory in a large number of seats from Tamil Nadu.

With deep gratitude for the honor of having served in your administration for the past five years, I make this request. The trust you placed in the son of a daily wage laborer will always remain the greatest blessing of my life. I now seek your blessings to repay that trust by working tirelessly among our people and our party workers without wavering." he noted.
