Chennai: A 39-year-old man from Chennai, who had been cheating more than 15 women by promising marriage and extorting money from them, has been caught by the police.
According to the police, a young woman from Coimbatore is working in Malaysia. She had registered her details on a popular matrimonial website. At that time, a man named Kannan (39) got in touch with her. He introduced himself as a software engineer and said he was working at a private company in Ambattur, Chennai.
He also said that since he was already married and had separated from his wife, he was looking for a woman to marry for a second time. Believing this, the Coimbatore woman continued to stay in touch with Kannan. Whenever he came to Chennai, the two met.
Kannan, who had promised to marry her, brought the woman to a lodge and was with her alone on several occasions. It is said that Kannan obtained around Rs. 11 lakh from the woman by giving various reasons. In this situation, when the woman accidentally looked at Kannan’s mobile phone, it contained videos of Kannan being intimate with several women.
When asked about this, Kannan evaded the question without giving a proper explanation. It also came to light that he had deceived more than 15 women like her, become intimate with them, and extorted money by threatening them with that video. The woman filed a complaint with the State Women’s Commission in Chepauk, stating that out of the Rs. 11 lakh he had taken from her, Kannan had returned only Rs. 4.15 lakh and had cheated her by not giving back the remaining amount.
In this regard, the Veppari All Women Police Station was ordered to conduct an investigation. It has also been learned that Kannan befriended and cheated not only the Coimbatore woman, but also women living in Chennai, Madurai, Bengaluru, Mumbai, and countries including Canada, Singapore, and Malaysia in the same manner. The police said that many of the women affected by him may have refrained from filing complaints, fearing that if the matter became public, it would create problems in their married life and families.
Following this, the police have detained and are questioning Kannan, who has been accused. However, he continues to deny the allegations against him. The investigation into this matter is ongoing.
