At the home of friend Durai Murugan, who holds the post of DMK General Secretary, was it a priestly wedding with Sanskrit mantras? asked Dravidar Kazhagam president K. Veeramani.
Sanskrit mantras were recited in the Vedic manner at the wedding ceremony of DMK General Secretary Durai Murugan’s granddaughter, sparking a major debate on social media and among Dravidian movement supporters.
Meanwhile, on this matter, Dravidar Kazhagam president Veeramani has posted a message on his X page. In that post, he wrote, "At the home of friend Durai Murugan, who holds the post of DMK General Secretary, was it a priestly wedding with Sanskrit mantras?

An invitation announcing a wedding under the leadership of the DMK leader!
Pictures of leaders including Periyar, Anna, and Kalaignar also in the invitation!
Isn’t this a disgrace to the DMK and its leader?
The DMK leader must stop this double standard from continuing any further!
An invitation has been sent stating that the wedding of Senthamarai, the granddaughter of former minister Durai Murugan, who has served for several years as the DMK’s general secretary, and the daughter of Vellore constituency DMK Member of Parliament Kathir Anand, will be conducted under the leadership of the honorable DMK leader M.K. Stalin. The invitation card also features pictures of Periyar, Anna, Kalaignar, M.K. Stalin, his wife, and opposition leader Udhayanidhi Stalin.
Was a priestly wedding conducted at the DMK General Secretary’s residence with Sanskrit Vedic chants?
In the lavish wedding held on the morning of 1.11.2026, the news that ‘the Durai Murugan family wedding was conducted amid the chanting of Sanskrit Vedic mantras’ has appeared in today’s ‘newspaper’ and has also taken over social media.
With such a double standard, the conduct that has brought disrespect to the party’s principles has led Dravidar Kazhagam Tamilar Peravai president Professor Su. Veerapandian and Dr. Senthilkumar (former MP) to post on social media that “my heart aches” and that “in a movement with firm ideological commitment, my mind does not agree to such behavior,” expressing their views gently!

It is through this alone that we, upon learning of this news, feel deep sorrow and shame.
If it is a priest-led wedding, why issue an invitation saying it is under the leadership of the DMK leader?
If your family wedding is going to be conducted only in the priestly manner, then why an invitation that, as if it were being conducted by the DMK leader, also carries pictures of Dravidian movement leaders?
Moreover, at a family function of our beloved General Secretary, who holds the second position in the DMK, should an invitation be issued in a way that brings disrepute to the DMK leader and the movement through this double standard?
Friend Durai Murugan has been in the DMK for more than 45 years. He is known to the whole country. Isn’t this an indelible stain on his public life? What if it is a pot of milk? If even a drop of (Aryan) poison falls into it! Shouldn’t he have thought a little about the “whiteness of milk” that would be spoken of?
The movement is more important than individuals, and the ideology and ideals embraced by the movement are even more important, aren’t they? Discipline is even more important than all of these.
If it was to be a priestly wedding, couldn’t that have been honestly and respectfully informed to the leader, and conducted openly that way?
The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, with its 75-year history, is not merely a political party; it is a unique movement formed with the resolve to use power to implement the principles of rationalism and self-respect. It is a movement charted by leaders such as Scholar Anna and Kalaignar.
Self-respect marriage was introduced by Thanthai Periyar; Chief Minister Anna gave it legal form.
Thanthai Periyar was the one who introduced the self-respect marriage system, doing away with Brahmin priests and Sanskrit mantras.

Even during his brief tenure as Chief Minister, it was Scholar Anna who secured legal recognition for it and established it as one of his three landmark historical achievements. Can the person holding the post of general secretary of the movement led by him deviate from that ideology?
Therefore, the Dravidar Kazhagam strongly condemns this. For enemies who wait for anything they can get to attack the DMK, isn’t a piece of news like this just like puffed rice falling into their mouths?
For the attention of the DMK leader
He has said that it is very necessary and urgent for the DMK leader and the party to carefully watch out for and prevent such double-standard actions from continuing in the future.
