The ongoing power cuts in Tamil Nadu are creating major pressure on the TVK government.
To put an end to this, the Tamil Nadu government announced yesterday (October 12) that it will purchase one unit of electricity from private players for Rs. 35.
Former Tamil Nadu Industries Minister T.R.B. Raja has opposed the purchase of electricity at Rs. 35 per unit.
“The TVK government’s administration is buying electricity that can be produced for ₹5 by spending ₹35!
The TVK government that took office after the election, on May 23, 2026, had questioned the previous DMK government, accusing it of purchasing power at a higher price!

At the last minute after consulting an astrologer?
The same TVK government had promised on June 25, 2026, that it would buy electricity at a lower price through long-term contracts.
But on October 12, 2026, electricity was purchased in a rush at up to ₹37 per unit! What happened to the electricity procurement tariffs approved under the DMK regime, which were only ₹5.40 to ₹9.50?
By September 9 itself, Andhra had already contracted electricity for its October requirement at ₹16 to ₹20.
Did the Tamil Nadu government wait until the last minute, as if reading the stars?
7 times higher price...
Both the Thoothukudi and North Chennai thermal power stations, established under Chief Minister Stalin’s efficient Dravidian Model DMK government, were ready on time, but due to this government’s poor planning and the depletion of coal reserves, both stations are now operating at very low capacity!
Why is this government buying electricity that can be generated at these two stations for just 5 rupees at 7 times the price, paying as much as 35 to 37 rupees?

This situation today is solely because this government has badly botched power generation and imported coal procurement! According to the current contract, if the entire electricity requirement is bought for just 20 days, the cost will exceed ₹3,100 crore, say those who know the matter! Why such wasteful spending from the people’s tax money? Can you show the people not only the power tariff, but the full accounting for these decisions as well? #TamilNadu #PowerCrisis #TvkFails

Why the wasteful spending?
This situation exists today only because this government has badly bungled power generation and imported coal procurement!
According to the current agreement, if all the electricity is purchased for just 20 days, the cost will be more than ₹3,100 crore, say those who know the matter!
Why such wasteful spending with the people’s tax money?
Can you show the people not just the electricity bill, but the full account for these decisions?”
