Mumbai: The submarine detection ship INS Mangrol was formally inducted into the Navy in Mumbai yesterday.
This ship, built by the ‘Cochin Shipyard Limited’ company in Kochi, has the capability to detect and destroy threats from submarines, and to operate in coordination with maritime patrol aircraft, helicopters, and other warships. It is also equipped to take part in maritime surveillance, low-intensity maritime operations, and mine warfare exercises.
It will help protect ports and coastal areas, while also supporting the overall operations of the Navy.
The ship has been named after Mangrol, a coastal fishing town in Junagadh district of Gujarat. This new vessel carries forward the legacy of INS Mangrol, a minesweeper-class warship that had earlier served in the Indian Navy until April 2004.
This name has been given in keeping with the Navy’s tradition of passing on the names and pride of old warships to the next generation of ships. This warship has been built with more than 80 percent indigenous materials. This ship demonstrates India’s growing self-reliance in modern warship design, construction, and the integration of advanced weapons/sensors.
