Tukaram Mundhe is the Commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration in Maharashtra. Since the day he took up this post, the actions he has been taking have left restaurant owners across the state shaken. He has been immediately canceling or suspending the licenses of restaurants that do not maintain cleanliness and comply with regulations. Under his actions, nothing has been spared, from small eateries to major brand restaurants. Seeing Tukaram Mundhe’s actions, state governments across India have begun taking action against restaurants in their respective states.
Tukaram Mundhe, the Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration commissioner known as the “lion” or “hero,” has drawn attention not only in India but also from global media.

The U.S. newspaper The New York Times has published a front-page story referring to Mundhe as a “rockstar” for taking aggressive action against food safety violations at restaurants and food outlets across Maharashtra.
In it, it published the report with the headline, “No profession seems to have escaped Tukaram Mundhe’s scrutiny... Diners praise him, restaurant owners fear him.” The New York Times, which described Mundhe as a “food safety celebrity,” noted that his swift actions have drawn public attention.
Munde, on his X page, shared a New York Times article and noted, "Good governance is not about making headlines, but about bringing about change." He also posted, "Food safety is fundamentally about protecting people, upholding standards, and building public trust. When enforcement is fair, fearless, and consistent, institutions gain credibility.
People also begin to believe that the system works. The New York Times has reported a story like this from Maharashtra," he wrote.
Previously, the BBC had reported that Munde’s popularity reflected a broader issue. It noted that when ordinary government work such as inspections and enforcement is carried out openly and consistently, Tukaram Munde’s actions may seem extraordinary to citizens accustomed to bureaucratic delays or weak enforcement.
In a report published by Reuters, an article about Munde was published under the headline, "Indian food safety officer shakes Mumbai with surprise raids."
