Mumbai: Following selling in metal, real estate, and public sector banking stocks, Indian indices recovered from losses but ended lower again in today’s volatile session.
Amid rising tensions in the Middle East, crude oil rose to around $109 per barrel, causing the Indian stock market to open lower and remain in negative territory for most of the session.
In today’s trading, the Nifty index touched a low of 23,231.40. At the same time, the Sensex fell by as much as 740 points, alarming investors. Meanwhile, a moderate easing in crude oil prices helped significantly reduce selling pressure in the stock market.
However, due to selling in metal, real estate, and public sector bank stocks, the Indian indices, after recovering significantly from their lows during a volatile trading session, ended lower in late trade.
At the close of trading, the Sensex fell 120.83 points to 74,781.76, while the Nifty settled at 23,398.10, down 79.70 points.
In the Sensex, shares including Bajaj Finance, InterGlobe Aviation, Mahindra & Mahindra, Tata Steel, UltraTech Cement, and Axis Bank fell, while shares such as Tech Mahindra, HCL Tech, Infosys, Bharti Airtel, and ITC rose.
In the Nifty, shares including Dr. Reddy's Laboratories, HDFC Bank, ITC, Tech Mahindra, and Wipro rose, while shares such as Hindalco Industries, JSW Steel, Tata Steel, Eicher Motors, and ONGC fell.
In terms of sectors, while the Nifty Private Bank index rose 0.5%, the Metal and Realty indices fell 2% each, and the Auto, Energy, Oil & Gas, and Public Sector Bank indices declined 0.5% each.
This week, the Sensex and Nifty fell 2% each. The Nifty Midcap index declined 0.26% and the Smallcap index fell 0.6%.
More than 130 stocks, including Welspun Corp, Redington, Finolex Cables, Laurus Labs, FSN E-Commerce Ventures, Lenskart Solutions, Divi's Labs, Chennai Petroleum, and others, hit their 52-week high in today's trading.
More than 180 stocks, including HEG, Gujarat Energy, Muthoot Finance, IEX, Bikaji Foods, Ircon International, Ambuja Cements, Cello World, Shree Cement, Aditya Birla Fashion, ACC, HDFC Bank, Havells India, Rail Vikas Nigam, ICICI Lombard, IRFC, Zensar Technologies, IRCTC, PI Industries, and SBI Life Insurance, hit their 52-week low.
According to the data, foreign institutional investors sold shares worth Rs. 438.24 crore yesterday (Thursday).
In the Asian market, South Korea’s Kospi, Japan’s Nikkei 225 index, Shanghai’s SSE Composite Index, and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index also fell significantly. U.S. markets closed lower yesterday.
Global Brent crude oil is up 0.95 percent to 108.7 U.S. dollars per barrel.
