New Delhi: Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri has been given the opportunity to fill the Rajya Sabha seat vacated by former Union Minister of State L. Murugan, who resigned. The BJP has recommended him for the interim MP post from Madhya Pradesh.
Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri is set to be elected to the Rajya Sabha from Madhya Pradesh. He has been announced as the candidate for the Rajya Sabha seat that fell vacant after former Union Minister of State L. Murugan resigned from his post.
With this, it has been confirmed that Hardeep Singh Puri will continue in the Union Cabinet.
Earlier, when the BJP released its list of Rajya Sabha candidates, Hardeep Singh Puri’s name was not included in it.
This raised the question of whether Hardeep Singh Puri would continue in the Union Cabinet. However, now that Hardeep Singh Puri has been elected to the Rajya Sabha from Madhya Pradesh, it has been confirmed that he will remain in the Cabinet.
The BJP released the official recommendation letter for this this afternoon. L. Murugan, who was serving as the Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting, resigned from both his ministerial post and his Rajya Sabha MP position on October 18 last year.
In a post on 'X' about this, he had said that his desire to work for the party in Tamil Nadu was the reason for his resignation. He had stated that serving Bharat Mata and Tamil Nadu under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi was the greatest honor of his life.
He also said that, born as the son of a daily wage laborer, getting the opportunity to serve in Prime Minister Modi's cabinet was a great blessing.
He had also noted that he now wants to fully dedicate himself to strengthening the BJP in Tamil Nadu ahead of the 2029 Lok Sabha elections.
The Election Commission of India announced on October 22 the by-election for the vacant Rajya Sabha seat in Madhya Pradesh. Six days after this announcement was made, the BJP has announced Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri as its candidate.
Voting for this seat will be held on November 12 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. If necessary, votes will be counted from 5 p.m. the same day. The deadline for completing the election process is November 16, 2026. The term of the member elected to this seat will last until April 2, 2030.
