The High Court has granted the Tamil Nadu government four weeks to file a clarification petition in the appeal case filed against the cancellation of the government order granting government jobs to the families of those who died in the Karur stampede.
In September 2025, 41 people lost their lives after being caught in a stampede at a TVK election campaign meeting in Veluchamipuram, Karur district. In order to help the families of the deceased, the Tamil Nadu government issued a government order granting government jobs on compassionate grounds to 31 members from those families. Chief Minister Vijay distributed the appointment orders for these jobs.
Challenging this, the court that heard the case filed in the Madurai Bench of the Chennai High Court by Dheeran Thirumurugan of the Naam Tamilar Katchi ruled to cancel the Tamil Nadu government order granting government jobs to the affected family members.
Challenging this order, the Tamil Nadu government and those from the affected families, including Prabhakaran, Selvakumar, and Anandajyothi, filed appeal petitions in the Supreme Court.
The Supreme Court, which heard this case, had imposed an interim stay on the order of the Madras High Court. This appeal came up again for hearing before a bench headed by Justice J.B. Pardiwala in the Supreme Court.
At that time, senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi, appearing for the Tamil Nadu government, said, “We need additional time to file a reply explaining the counter-affidavit filed by the opposing side in this matter, and therefore the hearing of the case should be adjourned,” and made that request.
At that time, the judges asked, “Why are you seeking additional time to file a clarification petition when there is no change in the government’s stand?” and granted the Tamil Nadu government four weeks’ time to file a clarification petition in this matter, adjourning the hearing of the case to December 8.
