Australia’s leading star all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has officially announced his retirement from international cricket.
Glenn Maxwell, a star player for the Australian team and one of the world’s best all-rounders, has built a unique fan following around the world with his distinctive cricket shots. Known as “Big Show,” Maxwell has become famous not only for playing for Australia, but also for featuring in competitions such as the IPL held in India.
Maxwell, who made his debut for Australia in ODIs and T20s in the match against Afghanistan in Sharjah in 2012, made his Test debut against India in Hyderabad in 2013.
38-year-old Maxwell has played 7 Test matches, 149 One Day Internationals, and 130 T20 Internationals for Australia across all three formats. He has scored 3,990 runs in ODIs and 2,897 runs in T20Is, while managing only 339 runs in Test cricket, where he has not been particularly successful. He has not had a chance in the Test team since 2017. In addition, Maxwell excelled as a bowler, taking 136 wickets and becoming one of the best all-rounders.
Maxwell, who has piled up runs and wickets in ODIs and T20s, has scored 3,990 runs in 149 ODI matches, including 4 centuries and 23 half-centuries. In the 2023 match against Afghanistan, when Australia were chasing a target of 292 and were struggling at 91 for 7 wickets, he battled through a thigh injury and single-handedly scored 201* off 126 balls to guide them to victory. He has also taken 77 wickets in bowling.
He has scored 2,897 runs in T20s, including 5 centuries and 12 half-centuries, and has taken 51 wickets with the ball. He was a key part of the Australian team that won the ODI World Cup in 2015 and 2023, and the T20 World Cup in 2021.
Having retired from ODIs after the 2025 Champions Trophy held last year, Maxwell has now brought the curtain down on his international cricket career altogether. He has put an end to his international and domestic career, but said he will continue to play in T20 leagues such as the Big Bash League and the IPL.
