Maragatham Kumaravel, the Madurantakam MLA, and Sathyabama, the Dharapuram MLA, who contested on behalf of the AIADMK and won in the last Assembly general election, resigned from their posts and joined the ruling party, TVK.
As a result, both constituencies were declared vacant, and voting for these constituencies was held on October 6.
In this by-election, there was a five-cornered contest among TVK, DMK, AIADMK, Naam Tamilar Katchi, and the Left parties.
In the Madurantakam constituency, 28 candidates entered the fray, including Maragatham Kumaravel on behalf of TVK, Paranthaman on behalf of DMK, and Kanitha Sampath on behalf of AIADMK.
Similarly, in the Dharapuram constituency, 22 candidates entered the fray, including TVK’s Sathyabama, DMK’s Suganya, AIADMK’s Bhanumathi, Nadhag’s Karthika, and CPI’s Laxmanan.
With the votes in Madurantakam and Dharapuram counted today, TVK has recorded its victory in both constituencies.
In this by-election, which was called a “weight election,” TVK has captured the AIADMK stronghold.
In this context, let’s look at the comparison between the general election and by-election results in this collection.
Voting
In the legislative assembly election held last April, a total of 93.22 percent of votes were recorded in the Madurantakam constituency, and a total of 89.89 votes were recorded in the Dharapuram constituency.

But in the by-election that has just concluded, 85.88 percent of the votes were recorded in the Madurantakam constituency, and a total of 80.31 percent of the votes were recorded in the Dharapuram constituency. So, compared with the election that was just held, voter turnout has decreased in both constituencies in this by-election.
Madurantakam: General Election vs By-election Results
In the recently concluded 2026 Assembly election, in the Madurantakam constituency, AIADMK secured first place with 69,284 votes, TVK secured second place with 62,090 votes, DMK secured third place with 59,838 votes, and Naam Tamilar Katchi secured fourth place with 4,950 votes.
In the recently concluded Madurantakam by-election, TVK has secured first place with 70,884 votes, DMK has secured second place with 51,042 votes, AIADMK has secured third place with 45,674 votes, and NTK has secured fourth place with 2,013 votes.
Tharapuram: General Election vs By-election Results
In the recently concluded 2026 legislative assembly election, in the Dharapuram constituency, AIADMK secured first place with 81,100 votes, DMK came second with 64,373 votes, TVK came third with 46,438 votes, and NTK came fourth with 6026 votes.
In the recently concluded Dharapuram by-election, TVK has secured first place with 66,841 votes, DMK has taken second place with 57,370 votes, AIADMK has taken third place with 45,280 votes, and NTK has taken fourth place with 5,268 votes.
In both constituencies where AIADMK won in the general election, TVK has now won and stamped its victory. At the same time, while AIADMK let victory slip away in its stronghold, DMK has secured second place and demonstrated its strength.
In both constituencies, DMK’s vote count has decreased, and one reason for that is the drop in vote percentage. It is also noteworthy that in the general election, DMK entered the field with the strength of a large alliance, whereas in this election it contested without the support of any alliance parties other than DMDK.
