The Tamil Nadu Electricity Board on Wednesday (Oct. 14) issued an explanation regarding the electricity bill of Rs. 10,451 imposed on the home of a goat herder.
Rajendran, a goat herder from Ramakrishnapuram near Srivilliputhur in Virudhunagar district, was charged an electricity bill of Rs. 10,251.
Media reports said that although he complained about it and was asked to pay the bill, his electricity connection was disconnected because he was unable to pay the electricity charges.
In this situation, the Electricity Board has explained that the electricity bill has now been calculated correctly and that there was an error in the meter reading calculation.
In this regard, the Electricity Board stated in its explanation:
In Thiruvilliputhur, Ramakrishnapuram village, for the house electricity connection No. 07268001199 belonging to Rajendran, son of Pitchai, a bill of Rs. 700 was issued in the month of 07/2026. Following this, the electricity meter was inspected and readings were recorded by Electricity Board officials on 31/07/2026 and 02/08/2026. The inspection confirmed that the electricity meter was in good condition.
Again, since the electricity bill for September 2026 was recorded as Rs. 10,451, a field inspection was conducted again on 02/09/2026. During the inspection, it was found that an Air Cooler was being used in Rajendran’s house, and the same level of usage had also been observed during the periods 09/2024 and 11/2024.
When this was explained to Rajendran, he accepted it and stated that he would pay the electricity bill within 10 days. However, since the electricity bill was not paid within the stipulated time, the power supply was disconnected on 24/9/2026, and this information is respectfully submitted.
In this situation, based on the news published in the media, the meter data was downloaded and examined. It is respectfully submitted that, due to the meter reader having under-recorded and incorrectly recorded the electricity consumption for the past 12 months, and because the special inspection recorded the correct electricity consumption, an electricity bill of Rs. 10,451 has been calculated for the month of September 2026.
Therefore, based on the meter inspection report (CMRI download), the electricity bill has been revised and the current outstanding amount has been calculated as Rs. 4,054. It is also respectfully submitted that the erring meter reader has been placed under suspension.
Furthermore, it is stated that since Rajendran paid the revised electricity bill, the information that the power supply was restored today is also respectfully submitted.
