Two taxi drivers and a 43-year-old Nigerian national, alleged to have been involved in drug smuggling, have been arrested in the northern part of Delhi.
Officials said all three of them had been transporting drugs using a taxi.
From those arrested, 22.1 grams of cocaine, 90 grams of heroin, and 15.3 grams of MDMA were seized. The taxi allegedly used for drug smuggling was also seized.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Achhe Babu (25) from Farrukhabad in Uttar Pradesh, Zahid (22) from Shahjahanpur, and Nigerian national Gazetan Chukwujekwu (43), who lives in Mehrauli, Delhi.
On October 12, the police received a tip-off that Achhe Babu and Zahid were going to distribute narcotics near the Ring Road foot overbridge in the Kashmiri Gate area.
Following this, around 9:15 p.m., the police arrested Ache Babu. After that, they also arrested Jahith, who was in a car parked nearby. During this operation, 16.4 grams of cocaine and 90 grams of heroin were seized.
During questioning, the taxi drivers said that they had been in contact with a person named Gazethan, and that he had first hired their taxi and involved them in drug smuggling.
Based on the information they provided, the police arrested Gazethan, who was in Mehrauli, on October 13. A further 5.7 grams of cocaine and 15.3 grams of MDMA were seized from him.
According to police information, Achche Babu had been renting and driving a taxi for Rs. 600 a day. Jahith had also worked as a taxi driver. Both of them smuggled drugs according to the time available to them.
Gazetan stated during questioning that he came to India on a medical visa in 2022 and remained here even after the visa period expired. Police said he had been involved in drug smuggling along with another Nigerian man identified as Ameka. Searches were conducted to locate Ameka. However, he could not be found. Police are making efforts to determine the source of the seized drugs, identify other individuals connected to this smuggling network, and confirm what their role was.
A case has been registered under the NDPS Act in connection with this incident, and the investigation is ongoing.
