I realize that some controversies that took place in the recently concluded Assembly session have caused anger and dissatisfaction among the Tamil people and our comrades.
And since my prison history is also a major part of this controversy, I would like to clarify it a little.
Brother Vijay,
What you said is true... none of it is false. During the Emergency, after Leader Kalaignar strongly opposed it by gathering a huge crowd at Marina Beach and sharply criticizing the MISA Act, the then Central Government dismissed the DMK government on 30.1.1976.
The very next moment after the government was dismissed, the police came to the Gopalapuram house to arrest me under the MISA Act. I was not at home that day.
"The boy has gone on a campaign and will return tomorrow. When he comes back, I will call you myself on the phone; come and arrest him," said the artist and sent the message. The next day, when I arrived, he himself had the police come and told them to arrest me.
I suffered many cruelties in prison. They took us and locked us up in the very place where leprosy patients were kept. Ten of us were confined in a small room. All of us had to urinate into a single pot inside that room. The place itself would stink terribly. That was where we had to sleep.
At night, the police would not let us sleep; they would beat us with batons and stomp on us with their boots. On another side, they would use life-term prisoners to brutally beat us as well. Because of the beating they gave, my dear elder brother, Member of Parliament Chitti Babu, died in prison itself.
All the fighters have come through this and more
My jawbone was broken by their beating. You too showed your jaw by placing your hand like this, didn’t you? That is right. Even today, I still have the scars from the beatings I received; I am not denying that.
For those in public life, especially for those fighting for Tamils and for Tamil Nadu, such oppression has happened to many people. We fighters have all come through this. Fighting back and facing the consequences is nothing new to us.
This has been the history of the DMK since the time of scholar Anna, whom you call the party’s ideological leader. It is a matter of pride for me that I am also part of that history.
History cannot be changed
No matter how much anyone tries to belittle it, history cannot be changed. It will remain the same for all time. If you have any doubt, didn’t you say there is a library in the Legislative Assembly? All the documents are there. Go there and read my struggle history! You will understand the truth.
Secondly, you have spoken false information about the Sarkaria Commission and about our leader Kalaignar. You have made allegations of corruption.
Since the Sarkaria Commission was constituted, governments have changed many times at both the Centre and in the State. If there had been any truth in these allegations, action would certainly have been taken. For all these years, you too have been repeating the false accusations made by those who harbored political malice against Kalaignar.
Moreover, you take a letter written by the Enforcement Directorate and say that it contains corruption allegations against us. In 95 percent of the cases in which the Enforcement Directorate has made allegations, the charges have not been proven so far, and the accused have been acquitted. It is well known to everyone here that the Enforcement Directorate is mostly being used for political vendetta.
How could it not be known?
To put it clearly, the Enforcement Directorate has filed many cases even against the Congress party leaders in your alliance. How did this escape your notice when you portray the Central Government as an ideological enemy?
Chief Minister brother Vijay, I have only one question for you. The Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly has its own dignity and respect. It is the place where many great leaders and eminent personalities shaped Tamil Nadu. That responsibility now rests with you as well.
In the Legislative Assembly, discuss issues like law and order, public welfare schemes, how to take Tamil Nadu further and further along the path of progress, and how to protect Tamil Nadu’s rights. That is what is good for Tamil Nadu and for the Tamil people. My request is that, instead of that, unnecessary controversies should not be discussed in the Legislative Assembly.
Looks like you forgot
After you became Chief Minister, you came to my house to meet me. At that time, I welcomed you by holding your hand. When we were talking then, you said to me:
"I spoke very critically of you during the election campaign, I am sorry Sir" என்று சொன்னீர்கள்.
To that I said: "It’s okay, Brother, I didn’t take any of that to heart. You are now the Chief Minister of a state; from now on, whenever you speak about anyone, speak with that dignity," I told him. It seems you have forgotten all that!
You must act with a sense of responsibility
I say again... your words and body language should reflect the dignity of a Chief Minister. We are the role models for the people, don’t forget that. You must act with awareness of the great responsibility you hold.
You have turned the Legislative Assembly itself into a place for making reels, and you run the administration like a movie shoot—standing on the bridge we built and doing photoshoots. To hide your incompetent governance, you keep posting all kinds of reels and deceiving an entire generation.
But what is the reality? There is a saying that before the truth can cross the village, the lie has already gone around the world... That is exactly what is happening.
Under your rule, law and order is in a deep pit, with murders, thefts, and sexual crimes against women happening every day.
You have canceled the Parandur airport project and pushed Tamil Nadu’s development back by 15 years.
You promised complete loan waiver for farmers, but you did not even carry that out properly.
You said every family would get 6 cooking gas cylinders a year, but now you have done an about-face and are saying only 3 cooking gas cylinders for eligible beneficiaries.

Is this the right change?
You said the women’s rights allowance would be Rs. 2,500, but you are still giving the same Rs. 1,000 that we had given.
You are still not even opening your mouth about many other promises. What you said then and what you do now are two different things.
The people who voted thinking they wanted change, especially our youth, should truly pay attention to what change has actually come now and whether this is the right kind of change. You should understand which government is capable of administration and which is incapable.
In particular, what I want to emphasize to my DMK comrades is this... the people did not vote for us completely, we could not come to power, so when people are affected by the mistakes happening under this government, we should not think, “What does it have to do with us?” Such a thought does not exist in our ideology at all.
DMK has never considered losing power to be a defeat. Just as a coin has two sides, I see this as another face of public service.
Whether we are in power or not, we must always keep fighting for Tamil Nadu’s rights, development, and the people.
