In the Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) election, the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) retained three of the four key posts, including the president’s position. Deepanshu Shokeen, who contested as an independent after the Indian National Students’ Union (NSUI) refused to give him a ticket, won the vice-president’s post.
Out of the four key posts in total (central panel), the ABVP won three positions — president, secretary, and joint secretary. The NSUI failed to win even a single seat.
Amid intense anticipation, the Delhi University Students’ Union election was held on Friday. In the run-up to it, student groups backed by major political parties such as the BJP, Congress and the Left competed over the past few weeks, with campaign activity on par with that of the main political parties, high-level committee oversight to ensure discipline in campaigning, and High Court restrictions. For security during the election, around 2,000 police personnel were deployed on the university campus alone. Following this, the votes cast in the election were counted on Saturday, and the official results were announced in the evening.
Accordingly, ABVP candidate Yash Tabas, who contested for the post of president, was declared elected with 24,576 votes. He received 2,053 more votes than NSUI candidate Vijay Shankar Meena, who contested against him.
For the post of vice president, Deepanshu Shokeen, who contested as an independent after being denied a chance by the NSUI organization and was dissatisfied, won the position with 30,615 votes.
In the contest for the post of secretary, the ABVP candidate won with 21,650 votes. The NSUI candidate received only 14,869 votes.
The ABVP candidate who contested for the post of joint secretary won with 16,615 votes. The Samajwadi Chhatra Sabha candidate who contested against him lost with 15,778 votes.
Last year as well, the ABVP organization had won all three posts of president, secretary, and joint secretary. At that time, the NSUI organization had managed to capture only the vice president post, whereas this year it could not win even a single seat.
Students’ issues: Recently, the collapse of a private paying guest (PG) accommodation building in the Satya Niketan area of South Delhi, which claimed the lives of 7 people including students, caused a major shock among students. As a result, issues such as student safety, quality hostel facilities, and infrastructure development emerged as major concerns in this election.
High Court restrictions: During this year’s election campaign, various violations surfaced, including convoys of luxury cars, violence, and excessive spending. Taking serious note of this, the Delhi High Court imposed a ban stating that victory processions must not be held under any circumstances after the election results are announced, whether on roads or on college campuses. The court also ordered that notices be sent to 140 candidates who were involved in violations, and warned that if the ban is violated, criminal action will be taken against those concerned.

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has congratulated the newly elected office-bearers who won in the Delhi University Students’ Union election.
In this regard, she further said on her ‘X’ page: My heartfelt congratulations to the young comrades from the ABVP organization, which has registered an impressive victory in the ‘DUSU’ election, and to Deepanshu Shokeen, who won the post of vice president. This is not just the victory of an organization, but the victory of every young person who considers patriotism, discipline, service, and struggle as the path of their life.
I am proud to say that I lived and learned these values when I served as the president of the Delhi University Students’ Union in the past. The Chief Minister has noted that, on behalf of the Delhi government, we will work together with the new student union team to implement many useful initiatives.
