Notices have been sent to 33.13 lakh voters in connection with the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral roll currently underway in Delhi, citing discrepancies in the details.
The names of prominent figures, including former Deputy Prime Minister L.K. Advani and former Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, are also included in this list.
A notice has been sent to 98-year-old Advani because the names of his daughter Pratibha and daughter-in-law Geetika could not be matched with the previous SIR voter list from 2002. His son Jayant’s name has been confirmed in this verification. All four are voters from the New Delhi Assembly constituency.
Notices have also been sent to former Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, his wife Seema, and son Meer. Election officials did not specify the reason for sending a notice to Manish Sisodia. The notice sent to Meer states that there is a discrepancy in his parents’ names, while the notice sent to Seema says that the details in her name do not match.
The main reasons for issuing the notices are the ‘logical inconsistencies’ in the details provided by voters in their enumeration forms and the inability to match those details with the 2002 SIR list.
According to information from the Delhi Chief Electoral Officer’s office, out of the approximately 97.54 lakh voters listed in the draft electoral roll, 33.13 lakh have been identified to receive notices due to such discrepancies. The names of 13,79,785 of them could not be linked with the 2002 electoral roll; logical discrepancies were found in the details of 19,33,134 people. So far, more than 31.63 lakh notices have been issued.
Notices have also been sent under the same procedure to several prominent figures, including Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, Aam Aadmi Party leader and former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, and former Union Minister Kapil Sibal. Since Rekha Gupta’s documents have been verified and her registration confirmed, her name is set to be included in the final voter list for the Shalimar Bagh constituency.
During the house-to-house verification exercise conducted from June 30 to Aug. 17, each voter was required to submit an enumeration form. The Delhi Chief Electoral Officer’s office said that notices were sent to those whose names could not be matched with the previous SIR list or whose details showed discrepancies compared with the earlier list.
Receiving a notice does not mean that a voter has been declared ineligible. Those concerned have been given an opportunity to verify their details by submitting their response and supporting documents.
The process for receiving claims and objections related to the SIR ends on Sept. 30. Voters who have received notices must submit their responses and supporting documents to the respective Assembly constituency electoral registration officers by Oct. 29. The final voters’ list is scheduled to be released on Nov. 4.
