Chennai: “Suppressing the voice that rises to protect democracy will destroy democracy itself,” DMK leader M.K. Stalin has said, condemning the arrests of those protesting in Delhi.
In a post shared on his social media page regarding this, he said, “The events unfolding in Delhi today, and the repression unleashed against those protesting peacefully, bring back painful memories of the Emergency period I experienced.
All political leaders, students, and protesting youth who have been detained in Delhi and across the country must be released immediately.
I strongly condemn the TVK government, which is acting as an offshoot of the BJP and unleashing police repression against students protesting in Tamil Nadu.
The Union government must immediately stop the attacks on young people who are exercising their democratic right to protest peacefully. Expressing dissent is not a crime. Suppressing the voice that rises to defend democracy will destroy democracy itself.
There is no room for compromise on the demand that Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar resign. He has posted that not only should he resign, but all the damage caused to the Election Commission should be repaired and its independence and integrity restored.”
The CJP has called for a protest in Delhi today (Oct. 10) demanding that Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar resign. In this situation, the Delhi Police has denied permission for the protest. As a result, swift arrests are being carried out.
CJP Protest 2.0
Delhi police are conducting intensive vehicle checks at various major road junctions connecting Jantar Mantar and central Delhi.
Police personnel, who are stopping protesters seen at Jantar Mantar and nearby areas in Delhi, are also arresting them. Since a large number of women are expected to participate in this protest, members of the ‘Pink Women Police Force’ have also been deployed there.
Amid speculation that YouTuber Dhruv Rathee may participate in the CJP protest, police have arrested him in Gurugram. There is also no information on where the police have taken him. CJP has condemned this.
Furthermore, opposition parties including the Aam Aadmi Party have criticized the central government for using its force to protect a single individual. They say this has brought Delhi to a standstill.
In that line, DMK leader M.K. Stalin has also registered his condemnation.
