India won two more silver medals and one bronze medal in shooting at the Asian Games on Monday. In addition, India also won a bronze in mixed martial arts. India’s medal tally at the Games has risen to 6, with 4 silver and 2 bronze medals.
Shooting
In the 10-meter air rifle men’s team event, the Indian team comprising Rudranksh Patil, Parth Mane, and Himanshu Dhillon finished second with 1,890.1 points to win silver. China clinched gold with a world record score of 1,899, while South Korea (1,884.2) won the bronze medal.
In the men’s individual event, Himanshu Dhillon won silver with 252.4 points and Rudransh Patil won bronze with 230.9 points. This was Himanshu’s first Asian Games. China’s Lihao Sheng won gold with an Asian record of 254.2.
With this, India’s medal tally in shooting alone at the Games has risen to 5, with 4 silver and 1 bronze.
Mixed Martial Arts
India’s Suchika Daryal won the bronze medal in mixed martial arts (MMA), which has been newly added to the ongoing Asian Games. Suchika, who had advanced to the semifinals in the women’s 60 kg weight category, faced Singapore’s Hui Hoon Teo there. Initially, the outcome of the bout was in Teo’s favor. Against that, an appeal was filed from the Indian side by paying a fee of about Rs. 95,800. Additional judges reviewed the match data and declared the semifinal a ‘draw’.
However, according to the competition rules, if the bout ended in a draw, the victory would be awarded to the competitor who weighed less. Based on that rule, Theo, who was 700 grams lighter than Suchika, was declared the winner. He advanced to the final.
Although this result was disappointing, Suchika said it was comforting to have the pride of being the first person to win a medal for India in this event in the competition’s history.
Boxing
India’s Sumit Kundu advanced to the pre-quarterfinals in the men’s 70 kg weight category. In the opening round, he defeated Thailand’s Panjong Sinchiri 5-0. Next, in the quarterfinals, he will face Iraq’s Ali Qasim Hamdan Al Saraa.
Badminton
The Indian men’s team defeated Bangladesh 3-0 to advance to the quarterfinals. Lakshya Sen, Ayush Shetty, and K. Srikanth all finished their matches in straight sets. Lakshya Sen defeated Ayman Zaman 21-4, 21-12, while Ayush Shetty beat Gaurav Singh 21-4, 21-13. Srikanth defeated Jumar Al Amin 21-15, 21-9.
Kabaddi
The Indian men’s kabaddi team defeated Japan 49-24 in its first group-stage match on Monday. The defending champions, India, had already taken a 31-9 lead by halftime thanks to outstanding performances from Ayan Loshap and Devang Dalal. India will face South Korea in its next match on Tuesday. Meanwhile, the defending champion Indian women’s team also won its first match, beating Bangladesh 42-21. It will take on Iran in its next match.
Sepaktakraw
In this event, the Indian men’s team lost 1-2 to Japan in its opening match. After winning the first game 15-13, 15-9 to take the lead, the Indian team lost the next two games 12-15, 15-17, 11-15 and 9-15, 12-15. India will face Malaysia in its next match on Tuesday.
Table Tennis
The Indian women’s team advanced to the quarterfinals after defeating Pakistan’s women’s team 3-0 in their group-stage match. Suthirta Mukherjee beat Alina Khan in straight sets 11-3, 11-3, 11-4. Cinderella Das defeated Kalsum Khan 11-6, 11-7, 11-5, while Sreeja Akula overcame Fatima Khan 11-4, 11-4, 11-5.
Similarly, the Indian men’s team also defeated Pakistan 3-0 to qualify for the quarterfinals. Harmeet Desai beat Muhammad Khan 11-4, 11-3, 11-5, while G. Sathiyan defeated Abbas Khan 11-1, 11-8, 11-9. Payas Jain defeated Muhammad Khan 11-2, 11-5, 11-7.
Hockey
The Indian women’s team recorded a superb 17-1 win over Indonesia on Monday in its second match of the group stage. For the team, Deepika Sherawat (8’, 28’, 40’), Rutuja Pisal (15’, 20’, 38’), and Navneet Kaur (35’, 56’, 57’) scored hat-tricks and impressed.
Sunelitha Toppo (11’, 30’), Lalremsiami (12’, 16’), Sakshi Rana (25’, 27’), captain Salima Tete (35’), and Ishika Chaudhary (36’) also scored. For Indonesia, Ines Aditya (32’) scored the goal. India will face Thailand in its next match on Wednesday. Meanwhile, the Indian men’s team will take on Sri Lanka in its second match on Tuesday.
Cricket
In the final match of the women’s T20 cricket tournament, defending champions India and Sri Lanka will clash on Tuesday (Sept. 22). It is noteworthy that India recently defeated the same Sri Lanka side to lift the women’s T20 Asia Cup title.
At present, the Indian women’s team is determined to defeat the same Sri Lankan side once again, become champions here as well, and establish its dominance on the Asian continent. As for the Sri Lankan team, it will try to make up in the Asian Games for what it missed in the Asia Cup.
Wushu
In the women’s Changquan final, India’s Naiman Wangsu finished 15th with 9.573 points, suffering disappointment. Hong Kong’s Hui Yu Laidia Sham (9.713) won gold, Macau’s So Man Su (9.710) took silver, and Indonesia’s Eugenia Diva (9.706) claimed bronze.
Swimming
In the men’s 50m backstroke final, India’s Srihari Nataraj touched the wall in 25.52 seconds to finish 10th and last. Nataraj was slower than the 25.37 seconds he had clocked in the heats. His personal best is 25.18 seconds. Another Indian in the event, Rishabh Das, missed out on a place in the final.
In the men’s 50m freestyle, Akash Mani and Geethesh Shah finished 26th and 28th respectively.
In the men's 100m backstroke event, Dhanush Suresh finished 22nd and exited with the heats. The Indian team, comprising Sajan Prakash, Dakshan Sasikumar, Vedanth Madhavan, and Aneesh Sunil, failed to advance to the final in the 4*200m freestyle event.
Soft Tennis
In the pre-quarterfinal round of the mixed doubles event, India lost 2-5 to the Philippines and was eliminated from the competition. The Indian pair of Adhya Tiwari and Jai Meena went down to the duo of Christy Sanoza and Sherwin Ray Nuguit by scores of 4-2, 2-4, 2-4, 3-5, 2-4, 5-3, 6-8.
