Coimbatore: The investigation into the suicide case of school student Akilan in Coimbatore has been transferred to the CBCID police.
Ashok Kumar and Kausalya Devi are a couple from 5th Street, Duraisamy Layout, Peelamedu, Coimbatore district. They had a 16-year-old son named Akilan. Akilan was studying in the 11th standard at a government-aided school in Peelamedu. It is said that on the 21st, student Akilan died by suicide by hanging himself at home.
Akilan's parents filed a complaint with the Peelamedu police, stating that he took his own life because he was deeply distressed after the headmaster Arun Kumar, teacher Vijayakumar, and two fellow students treated him with a caste-based mindset.
Based on the complaint, the police registered a case against Arun Kumar, Vijayakumar, and two students under three sections, including the Prevention of Atrocities against Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes Act. The two students were arrested and lodged in a juvenile observation home.
Meanwhile, Akilan’s parents and family members have been continuously insisting that headmaster Arun Kumar and teacher Vijayakumar, who are also involved in this matter, should be arrested as well.
Meanwhile, to press this demand, Akilan’s parents, relatives, and villagers have been staging a sit-in protest near the South Taluk office. Various political party members, leaders of movements, and office-bearers have been expressing support for the protest, demanding justice for Akilan’s death.
Meanwhile, on behalf of the all-party committee office-bearers, a petition was submitted today (Oct. 26) to City Police Commissioner R.V. Ramya Bharathi, urging that the investigation into the Akilan suicide case be transferred from the Coimbatore city Peelamedu police to the CBCID.
In this situation, DGP Maheshkumar Agarwal today (Oct. 26) afternoon ordered that the Akilan suicide case be transferred to the CBCID police.
In that order, it is stated: “The case registered by the Peelamedu police in connection with Akilan’s suicide is being immediately transferred for investigation by the CBCID police. The Commissioner of Police must immediately hand over the original files and investigation documents related to the above case to the CBCID DGP. The CBCID DGP should appoint the appropriate investigating officer for the inquiry related to this case and begin the investigation.”
Meanwhile, following the order to transfer the case investigation to the CBCID, Akilan’s family agreed to have his body autopsied.
It has also been stated by the protest committee that they will later announce whether to withdraw the protest or continue it after deliberation.
