Chennai: In order to promote rainwater conservation as a people’s movement across Tamil Nadu, Chief Minister Vijay yesterday launched the awareness campaign by unveiling the “Thuli” logo.
A rainwater conservation awareness event, organized by the Municipal Administration Department, was held yesterday at the headquarters of the Water Resources Board in Chepauk, Chennai. Chief Minister Vijay, who attended as the special guest, unveiled the “Thuli” logo for rainwater conservation awareness. He then inspected the rainwater harvesting model house set up there.
After that, at an event held on Marina Beach, he launched the awareness campaign in municipalities, town panchayats, and village panchayats, and also watched a short film.
In this regard, the Tamil Nadu government said in a press release:
Taking into account the increasing water demand, urbanization, changing rainfall patterns, and climate change, the rainwater harvesting campaign is being carried forward to protect groundwater resources.
Accordingly, in all districts, rainwater harvesting structures in government offices, public buildings, hospitals, schools, apartment complexes, and commercial buildings will be inspected and renovated. Not only new buildings, but also existing houses, institutions, commercial complexes, and factories will be encouraged to install rainwater harvesting systems.
Training will be provided to local body officials, engineers, teachers, students, self-help group members, residents’ welfare association members, and volunteers on rainwater harvesting. The progress of the work will be documented through photographs, geotags, and online reports.
In particular, structures such as rainwater recharge trenches, percolation pits, and recharge wells will be created according to the nature of the land. Awards will also be given to districts, local bodies, schools, colleges, and community organizations that perform exceptionally well in rainwater harvesting activities.
Moreover, this initiative will be integrated with other water resource projects currently in operation, so that resources can be used efficiently and the same work is not carried out again and again.
Therefore, the public and institutions should repair rainwater harvesting systems in their buildings and support this initiative of the government. This was stated in a press release issued by the Tamil Nadu government.
Ministers Aadhav Arjuna, Rajmohan, R. Kumar, Ne. Maria Wilson, and government department officials participated in the event.
