In the first case against Gem Veeramani, the Special Investigation Team informed the Madras High Court that the charge sheet would be filed soon.
In the POCSO case against Veeramani, due to the intervention of former Police Commissioner Arun, although the names of Veeramani and Shanthi were mentioned in the complaint, the police did not properly investigate the matter. Therefore, Varahi had filed a petition in the Madras High Court seeking that this case be transferred to a CBI investigation.
The High Court, which heard this case, had ordered that the evidence in the petitioner’s possession relating to the POCSO case be handed over to the Special Investigation Team and that a report on the status of the investigation in this case be filed. When the case came up again for hearing before Justice V. Lakshminarayanan on Monday, an additional petition was filed on behalf of Varahi.
In that, as per the High Court’s order, I appeared before the investigating officer on the 1st and 6th of last month and conveyed the information I had. It also relates to the case against Veeramani being covered up and concealed last February, and to the sale of Veeramani’s property for Rs. 147 crore. Of this, former Police Commissioner Arun purchased jewellery worth Rs. 24 crore from a jewellery shop through businessman Prakash.
Therefore, he had said that the police should be ordered to investigate the financial transaction for the purchase of this jewelry, as well as the sale of Veeramani's property. At that time, on the police side, a report was filed on the status of the investigation into the sexual assault case. The judge examined that report. At that time, on behalf of Varahi, it was argued that the former police commissioner had received 25 kg of gold as a bribe through businessman Prakash. Prakash is currently absconding abroad. It was argued that the police have not yet arrested him.
Then, the judge asked whether a lookout notice had been issued against Prakash. In response, the police side stated that the notice had been issued. It was also stated that in the first POCSO case against Veeramani, the charge sheet would be filed within three weeks. Taking this on record, the judge ordered that the hearing be adjourned to Nov. 12.
DMK case adjournment: The petition filed by the DMK seeking that summons be issued to obtain evidence regarding the allegations made by Chief Minister Vijay, ministers Aadhav Arjuna and Nirmalkumar that the DMK had protected Veeramani came up for hearing before Judge V. Lakshminarayanan on Monday. At that time, the petitioner’s side requested that the hearing be adjourned since a senior advocate would be appearing. Accepting this, the judge ordered that the hearing be adjourned to Nov. 12.
