Thiruvallur: Nandakumar (53) had been living in the Thiruverkadu area. He took photographs on his mobile phone of a girl who lived near his house while she was bathing, showed them to her, threatened her, and sexually assaulted her. Terrified by this, the girl wrote a letter in August 2022 and left home.
In this regard, the Thiruverkadu police registered a case and rescued the girl. During the investigation, it was found that Nandakumar had been continuously sexually assaulting the girl. Following this, the SRMC (Porur) All Women Police Station police registered a case under various sections of the law, including the POCSO Act, trespass into a house, and criminal intimidation, and arrested Nandakumar.
This case was being heard in the Tiruvallur District POCSO Special Court. Government advocate Bhuvaneswari appeared and argued on behalf of the prosecution. In the concluded trial, several of the charges against Nandakumar were proven. Following this, District POCSO Special Court Judge Umamaheswari delivered the verdict.
The court has sentenced Nandakumar, who sexually assaulted the girl, to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs. 30,000 each under three sections of the law, including POCSO, and, under three other sections for causing injury, trespassing into a house, and criminal intimidation, to 5 years, 10 years, and 3 years respectively, amounting to 18 years of rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs. 20,000.
Furthermore, in these sentences, the judge has stated in his verdict that Nandakumar must serve concurrently the sentences of 10 years each imposed under 3 legal provisions, including POCSO, and separately serve the sentences imposed under 3 legal provisions, including trespassing into a house.
In addition, he has ordered the government to provide Rs. 3 lakh as compensation to the affected girl. Since Rs. 2 lakh has already been paid, the judge has ordered the government to pay the remaining Rs. 1 lakh to the girl within 2 months.
