The BRICS summit begins in Delhi on Saturday (Sept. 12). Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping are set to participate in it.
In BRICS, considered one of the world’s most powerful organizations, the member countries are Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, and Indonesia. The friendly nations of this organization include Belarus, Bolivia, Kazakhstan, Cuba, Malaysia, Nigeria, Thailand, Uganda, Uzbekistan, and Vietnam. The world’s 11 major economic powers are members of BRICS. BRICS countries account for 40 percent of the world’s total economic output. Their share in global trade is 26 percent.
India currently chairs this grouping. India has already held this responsibility three times. At India’s invitation, the BRICS summit will begin in Delhi on Saturday at 2:35 p.m. As the first event of the summit, a consultation meeting among the leaders of the BRICS countries will be held under the theme “Strengthening inclusive global governance and multilateralism.”
Following this, the leaders will visit the Bharat Innovation Exhibition at 4.25 p.m. Then, the leaders will take a group photograph together at Bharat Mandapam. After this, a tree-planting event will take place. The first day’s proceedings will conclude with a dinner hosted by Prime Minister Modi for the leaders at 7.30 p.m. on Saturday.
On the second day, Sunday (Sept. 13), the leaders of the BRICS nations, leaders of friendly countries, and special invitees will begin arriving again at 9.55 a.m. After that, the leaders will officially take a group photograph at 10.35 a.m.
At 10:50 a.m., the session will continue under the theme, “Resilience, Innovation, Collaboration, Sustainability; Shaping the Future for Inclusive Global Growth.” After that, the New Delhi Declaration will be released. The conference will then conclude.
At the summit, Prime Minister Modi, Chinese President Xi Jinping, Russian President Putin, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, and others are participating. In the war in the Middle East with the United States, Iran has been attacking by targeting American positions in the United Arab Emirates. As a result, there is disagreement between the two countries. Because of this, there is doubt over whether consensus can be reached among the BRICS countries on issuing a joint statement.
India had invited Tarique Rahman, the Prime Minister of friendly Bangladesh, which currently heads the ‘BIMSTEC’ organization, to attend the BRICS summit. However, it is said that Tarique Rahman is displeased with India because India has given asylum to former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. As a result, there continues to be uncertainty over his participation in the summit. When Bangladesh Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman was asked about this by reporters in New York, he refused to answer. Indian Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal also said on Tuesday that there is so far no information about Tarique Rahman visiting Delhi.
