Chennai: Chief Minister Joseph Vijay will launch the expanded Perunthalaivar Kamarajar breakfast scheme for students studying in classes 6 to 8 in government schools in Tamil Nadu at a government school in Thiruvanmiyur, Chennai, tomorrow, Tuesday (Sept. 22).
The Chief Minister’s breakfast scheme was first launched on 15.9.2022 by then Chief Minister M.K. Stalin at a government school in Madurai. Following this, the scheme was extended to government-aided schools as well.
In this context, the Taveka government announced that the scheme would be expanded under the name “Perunthalaivar Kamarajar Breakfast Scheme” so that students studying from 6th to 8th standard in government schools would also benefit.
Regarding the effective implementation of this scheme, Chief Minister Vijay held detailed consultations with ministers and officials on the 18th.
Through this scheme, around 15.30 lakh boys and girls studying in 15,454 government and government-aided schools across Tamil Nadu will additionally benefit. For this, an additional allocation of Rs. 217.63 crore has been made in the current financial year (2026-2027).
The total allocation for this scheme stands at Rs. 724 crore.
Breakfast will be prepared and served through integrated kitchens in 447 government and government-aided schools under the Chennai Corporation. Arrangements have also been made to prepare and serve food through integrated kitchens in 2,150 government and government-aided schools in other corporations, municipalities, and the adjoining town panchayat areas, as well as in 12,857 government and government-aided schools in rural areas, using integrated kitchens and self-help groups in the respective areas.
This scheme will be launched at a ceremony to be held at 8.30 a.m. on Tuesday at Chennai Middle School in Gandhi Gram, Thiruvanmiyur, Chennai, where Chief Minister Joseph Vijay will participate, serve breakfast to the students, and then sit and eat with them.
Under the Perunthalaivar Kamarajar Breakfast Scheme, breakfast will be provided to students studying in classes 6 to 8 in government and government-aided schools.
Chief Minister Kamaraj has instructed officials that the kitchens and food serving areas implementing the breakfast scheme must be kept clean and hygienic and continuously monitored. He has also directed that all departmental officers working for this scheme should coordinate and carry out their assigned duties properly.
Under the breakfast scheme already being implemented, rava upma, kichadi, semiya upma, semiya vegetable kichadi, vegetable rice kichadi, wheat rava kichadi, vegetable sambar rice, sweet pongal, and semiya kesari are being provided.
Following this, a committee has been formed on behalf of the Tamil Nadu government to add new food items to the expanded breakfast scheme.
