Chennai: The public is becoming frightened by young people who engage in bike races and dangerous stunts on Chennai’s major roads at night. In a crackdown to control this, traffic police conducted intensive vehicle checks and seized 2,000 bikes over the past 3 days.
On many major roads, including Anna Salai, East Coast Road, Poonamallee High Road, and Marina Kamarajar Road, some young people race by riding bikes at high speed at night. Moreover, without realizing the danger, they also engage in various stunts, including wheeling. As a result, other motorists and pedestrians on the road are left frozen in fear.
Not only those who engage in bike racing, but also members of the public who follow traffic rules properly have died in accidents caused by such stunts. In this situation, in the early hours of the 4th, the day before yesterday, near Valluvar Kottam in Nungambakkam, 15 to 20 young men gathered on two-wheelers and engaged in bike stunts at high speed and carelessly, in a manner that posed a threat to the lives and safety of the public.
The related video footage spread rapidly on social media. Based on this video footage, traffic police conducted an investigation and arrested 16 youths and students. Eleven bikes used for the stunt were seized from them.
It is said that young people involved in bike racing and stunts usually ride vehicles without number plates to avoid getting caught by the police. Following this, in order to put an end to bike racing and stunts, under the orders of Chennai Police Commissioner Amalraj, traffic police, led by Additional Commissioner of Traffic Chamundeeswari, have been conducting intensive vehicle checks for the past 3 days.
In this operation, 2,000 bikes that were used for bike racing, stunts, and without registration plates were seized. Additional Commissioner of Traffic Police Chamundeeswari has warned that strict legal action will be taken against those involved in wheeling, bike racing, and other traffic violations that endanger the public and damage public property.
