The votes cast in the elections held for the vacant assembly and Lok Sabha constituencies in West Bengal and Assam were counted this morning. From the moment counting began this morning, in Assam’s Nagaon Lok Sabha constituency, BJP candidate Devashish Sharma was leading with more votes than Congress candidate Sibamoni Bora. He continues to lead with more than 50,000 votes.
Similarly, BJP candidates were leading in both constituencies in West Bengal as well. In the Nandigram constituency, BJP candidate Hasirani has taken a lead of 9,000 votes.

In another constituency, Reginagar, the BJP candidate is leading with 11,000 votes.
In the 2026 legislative assembly election in West Bengal, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari won in both the Nandigram and Bhabanipur constituencies, but Suvendu Adhikari retained the Bhabanipur seat and resigned from the Nandigram constituency MLA post. The BJP has fielded Hasirani Ratha, the mother of Chandranath Rath, the former aide of Adhikari who was shot dead on May 6 last year, as its candidate in this constituency. The candidate fielded by the Trinamool Congress led by Mamata Banerjee in this constituency suddenly withdrew his nomination papers.
Following this, Mamata Banerjee extended her support to Milan Pradhan, the candidate fielded by the Congress party. However, the Congress candidate was also arrested by the state government in a case registered 20 years ago and was jailed for a few days. Similarly, Humayun Kabir, the leader of the Aam Janata Unnayan Party (AJUP), who won in the Rejinagar and Naoda constituencies, retained only the Naoda constituency and resigned from the MLA post of the Rejinagar constituency. Following this, in the vacant constituency, Humayun Kabir’s son, Golam Nabi Azad, is contesting. He is being challenged by the BJP’s Saharav Sarkar.
Similarly, a by-election was held in Assam’s Nagaon Lok Sabha constituency. Congress won this constituency in the 2019 and 2024 elections. Last time, Pradyut Bordoloi, who won on behalf of Congress, left the party, joined the BJP, and then resigned from his MP post. He later contested and won the Dispur Assembly constituency in the 2026 Assam Assembly election.
The BJP has now fielded former Deputy Commissioner Debashish Sharma in the Nagaon by-election. At the same time, Congress has fielded former Batadroba MLA Sibamoni Bora.
