Chennai: At present, the race is only between two parties when it comes to protecting criminals and arresting those who are fighting. One is the BJP in Delhi, and the other is TVK in Tamil Nadu. DMK leader M.K. Stalin has said that Nadhag functionary Karthika and her party members should be released unconditionally.
Regarding this, on his X page, he said that the TVK government’s arrest of Naam Tamilar Katchi candidate Karthika, due to a case filed during the recently concluded Dharapuram constituency by-election, is strongly condemnable.
Women from marginalized communities who engage in public life should be welcomed and encouraged, regardless of policy differences. What is this government going to achieve by arresting and intimidating such people? In the past, when Karthika criticized the DMK and its ideological leaders, we approached it with the intention of responding appropriately from an ideological standpoint and clarifying matters; we never intended to imprison women leaders and silence them.
But the TVK government is behaving like an authoritarian regime that lacks tolerance and a democratic spirit. The whole country saw the abuse of power by the TVK government in the by-election. Arresting and harassing Nadhag functionaries for speaking up against it is an act of tyranny and narrow-mindedness.
Police officers who carry out arrests in ordinary cases that are bailable will face judicial censure. Police officers should not aid and abet TVK’s political vendetta.
The Taveka government is engaging in such arrests to divert attention from the arrest of a Taveka functionary and his associates in the heinous drug smuggling case that has shaken the entire country, and to hide its administrative failures.
On the other hand, those who issued death threats to journalists and those who abetted gang rape are roaming free only because they are in Taveka.
At present, the competition is only between two parties when it comes to protecting criminals and arresting those who are fighting. One is the BJP in Delhi, and the other is TVK in Tamil Nadu. Your fascism-and-kheer drama is increasingly being exposed day by day. Karthika and her party members must be released unconditionally,” it said.
Following this, AMMK General Secretary TTV Dhinakaran, on his X page, said that the arrest of six party functionaries, including Karthika, who contested the Dharapuram Assembly constituency by-election on behalf of the Naam Tamilar Katchi, is strongly condemnable as the TVK government’s vindictive action against the opposition.
Media reports have stated that Ms. Karthika, the Naam Tamilar Katchi candidate for the Dharapuram Assembly constituency, along with her husband and four others belonging to that party, have been arrested by the police.
During the election campaign, the TVK government’s vindictive action of deploying the police to arrest and imprison Karthika and the party’s office-bearers merely because they campaigned along the route taken by Chief Minister Vijay is strongly condemnable.
Using the police force, which should be deployed to prevent the rising murders, robberies, and crimes against women in Tamil Nadu, and to control the movement of narcotic substances, solely to arrest and imprison opposition members out of a desire for revenge is a blatant abuse of power.
Therefore, the government must immediately stop using the responsible police force, which is meant to uphold the rule of law, for its political likes and dislikes, and must also immediately withdraw the arrest proceedings against all the office bearers of the Naam Tamilar Katchi, including Karthika,” he said.
