TTV Dhinakaran has accused the TVK government of shutting down the Amma drinking water purification stations that had been meeting the drinking water needs of the poor and ordinary people. In his condemnation statement on this, he said, “The news reports in newspapers that all the Amma drinking water purification stations, started by the heart deity, revolutionary leader Amma, with the noble aim of providing clean and hygienic drinking water free of cost to the people of Chennai, are now lying defunct and inactive, are shocking.

Under this scheme, each family had been provided with 20 liters of purified drinking water free of cost every day. However, since these facilities have become nonfunctional, poor and ordinary people have been forced into the distressing situation of having to buy a can of water from private companies for up to Rs. 40 to meet their daily drinking water needs. In what way is it fair for the TVK government to have created a situation in which people are compelled to pay for even a basic necessity like drinking water?
Already, with the prices of essential commodities such as rice, pulses, sugar, and oil rising, the public is facing severe hardship. In this situation, the complaints that Amudham supermarkets, after announcing that they would supply fine rice at Rs. 30 per kg, are polishing the rice distributed free at ration shops and selling it have also caused dissatisfaction among the people.
The TVK government, which has failed to meet people’s basic needs and reduce the economic burden on the poor and ordinary people, has now also shut down the scheme that had been providing free drinking water, creating a situation in which people are forced to buy drinking water from private sellers at higher prices. This raises the question of whether this is the TVK government’s intention to indirectly encourage privatization.
At a time when people are already facing various difficulties even in obtaining essential goods, shutting down the Amma drinking water purification stations that had been meeting their drinking water needs reveals the TVK government’s lack of concern for public welfare.
Therefore, I urge the TVK government to immediately inspect the Amma drinking water purification plants that are lying idle in the Chennai Corporation areas, restore them and bring them back into operation, and without delay take steps to provide purified drinking water free of cost to the poor and needy, as before." he has noted.
