“The road to the Delhi throne passes through the streets of Lucknow” is a famous saying in national politics.
In Uttar Pradesh, a state with the power to determine the very course of Indian politics, another fierce test of strength is about to begin. On one side is Yogi Adityanath’s forceful Hindutva ideology; on the other, Akhilesh Yadav’s “PDA” social strategy, which seeks to bring together backward classes, Dalits, and minorities, and is determined to break it.
The Samajwadi Party, realizing that mere caste arithmetic and paper alliances are not enough in this field, is prioritizing Mainpuri MP Dimple Yadav, a “soft power” figure, to take on the BJP’s strength.
Seen as a “silent storm” who can attract women voters, who make up half of Uttar Pradesh’s electorate, Dimple counters the BJP’s “goonda raj” criticism with her dignified persona.
Although part of the “India” alliance, it was Akhilesh Yadav who proved through victory in 111 assembly constituencies that the Samajwadi Party alone has the real strength to take on the BJP head-on in Uttar Pradesh.
Let us briefly and clearly examine whether the PDA strategy devised by the Samajwadi Party to counter the BJP’s massive electoral moves, along with Dimple’s arrival, will bring a new dawn in Uttar Pradesh.
Akhilesh’s New Surge
In Uttar Pradesh politics, the Samajwadi Party is not just the main opposition party. Alongside Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, Akhilesh Yadav has emerged as one of the leaders posing the toughest challenge to the BJP government led by Narendra Modi.
In the 2024 Lok Sabha election, out of Uttar Pradesh’s total 80 constituencies, the INDIA alliance won 43 seats, with Samajwadi Party winning 37 and Congress 6. In contrast, the NDA alliance could secure only 36 seats. The election results in Uttar Pradesh were the main reason the BJP lost its outright majority at the Centre.
In particular, just a few months after the inauguration of the Ayodhya Ram temple, Samajwadi Party’s victory in the Faizabad constituency, which includes Ayodhya, dealt a major blow to the BJP’s political image.
When is the real test?
The upcoming Uttar Pradesh Assembly election in 2027 will be a major challenge for Akhilesh. In a situation where the party has not been in power for 10 consecutive years, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has emerged as a very strong leader. At the same time, crime statistics released by the NCRB have become a major weapon for the opposition against criticism of the current government.
In Uttar Pradesh, during the Samajwadi Party government, serious crimes stood at 64,450 in 2017, whereas under the BJP government they rose to 85,647 in 2024. Crimes against women also increased from 56,011 under the Samajwadi Party government to 66,398 under the BJP government.
At the same time, Akhilesh is building the PDA strategy very aggressively. The Samajwadi Party is not relying only on Yadav and Muslim votes, but is also bringing together other communities such as Kurmi and Pasi.
The Samajwadi Party has entered the fray with promises such as reorganizing booth committees and the ‘Stree Samman Samruddhi Yojana,’ which provides women with an annual assistance of Rs. 40,000, along with women’s safety.
Even so, it is very important for Akhilesh to break the image of “lawlessness” associated with the Samajwadi Party’s past rule. This is what the BJP has been using so far to corner Akhilesh.
What will Dimple’s arrival be like?
From supporting the Bharatiya Janata Party, speaking up in Parliament on issues such as exam paper leaks and student matters, to announcing welfare schemes for women in Lucknow, Dimple Yadav has been actively at work. This has completely changed the pattern of the BJP’s long-standing accusations against the Samajwadi Party.
Dimple, who belongs to the Thakur community of Uttarakhand, also enjoys support from non-Yadav castes and backward communities. To win over women voters who have benefited from the Yogi Adityanath government’s welfare schemes, Dimple will serve as a soft but persuasive “soft-power” campaigner.
The BJP has strong influence among first-time voters and young people. However, the recent protests are seen as having brought about a change in political sentiment among a section of the ‘Gen Z’ generation.
According to the Election Commission of India’s ‘Atlas 2024’ release, as of May 20, 2024, 21.19% of Uttar Pradesh voters were between the ages of 18 and 29. In other words, one in five voters is in this age group. Therefore, in the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly election, the youth vote could become a decisive political force.
A strong contender: the BJP
The BJP, which has been in power for 10 years, will view the Uttar Pradesh election as a preview of its bid to regain power at the Centre. Its strongest advantages are its highly robust organizational structure, Prime Minister Modi’s influence, Yogi Adityanath’s personal appeal, and electoral alliances.
Therefore, the 2027 election will not be merely a contest between Akhilesh and Adityanath. Rather, it will be a contest over which political vision can most credibly reach the women and young voters of Uttar Pradesh.
If Dimple manages to win over both sides, political observers say it would not be surprising if she also emerges as the state’s next chief minister.
Thus, the Uttar Pradesh 2027 election landscape shows that the BJP’s once-unshakable strength in 2022 has now weakened somewhat, and it also serves as a warning to the BJP.
