Chennai: If new tar roads are laid in municipal areas without removing the surface of old roads, strict action will be taken against the concerned officials, said Municipal Commissioner Sameeran.
In a press release issued by him in this regard: In the Chennai Municipal Corporation areas, under the Chief Minister’s Integrated Urban Development Mission scheme, he had announced under Rule 110 that road improvement works would be carried out at a cost of Rs. 300 crore.
As a first phase, a detailed project report was prepared at an estimated cost of Rs. 154.16 crore, and based on the recommendation of the monitoring committee, approval was obtained to carry out road works at a cost of Rs. 130.19 crore in the first phase, and tenders have been invited.
The Municipal Commissioner has issued guidelines and instructed officials on ensuring quality and accurate measurements when the tender process is completed and the road works are undertaken.
Accordingly, when carrying out road improvement works on tar roads, the old tar layer on the surface of the existing roads should be completely excavated and new tar roads should be laid.
The excavation work should be carried out to the same extent as the thickness of the new tar road laid on the road.
As a result, whatever height the road already has, the same height will be maintained even after laying the new tar road.
In edge areas where the special machine cannot excavate, it should be removed directly by other machines or by workers. This will help prevent buildings from going below road level.
If a new tar road is laid without properly excavating the old roads, strict action will be taken against the concerned officials and contractors who carried out the work. This was stated in the press release.
