Thanjavur: Police arrested six people yesterday for allegedly brainwashing young people and trying to recruit them into a banned organization.
The Tamil Nadu Special Investigation Unit police received secret information that secret classes were being conducted in Thanjavur to recruit young people into the banned Hizb-ut-Tahrir and Khilafat movements, and that they were being brainwashed.
Following this, after obtaining permission from the Thanjavur District Principal Sessions Court, the Special Investigation Team police, under the supervision of Deputy Superintendent of Police Charles, and comprising inspectors Sugumar, Senthilkumar, Vishnuprasad, Jayanti, and Muruganandam, carried out the operation.
In this situation, on Sept. 29, they searched and questioned the houses of Yasar Abdul (25) from the Karambai area of Thanjavur town, his brother Umar Mukhtar (29), Jageer Hussain (50) from SNM Nagar in Keelavasal, his brother Abdul (49), Samsudeen (27) from Ramasamypettai in Keelavasal, and Sheikh Fareed (38) from Raghuman Nagar in Keelavasal.
At that time, they seized more than 20 books related to the banned organizations Hizb-ut-Tahrir and the Caliphate movement, along with 5 mobile phones, a laptop, and a pen drive.
In this connection, a case was registered in four sections at the Thanjavur East Police Station under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, and 6 people — Yasar Abdul, Umar Mukhtar, Zakeer Hussain, Abdul, Sheikh Fareed, and Samsudeen — were arrested yesterday.
