Salem: In the case of the theft of 550 kg of silver ornaments from a silver workshop, police have arrested 5 people and recovered 323 kg of silver ornaments from them. They are also searching for the remaining silver ornaments and a few others involved in the robbery.
Karthikeyan runs a silver workshop in the Chinneri Vayakkadu area of Pallapatti, Salem. On the midnight of the 11th, masked unidentified persons entered his workshop. After damaging the surveillance cameras there, they stole about 550 kg of silver items and fled.
Following this, on the orders of City Police Commissioner Babu, special teams were formed under the supervision of Deputy Commissioner Bhaskaran, led by 3 Assistant Commissioners, to catch the robbers. These special teams conducted an intensive investigation and arrested 5 people connected to the robbery.
Regarding this, Police Commissioner Babu told reporters yesterday: The robbers, using two cars, traveled from Salem to Thanjavur, and from there to Dindigul and Coimbatore, covering a distance of 2,100 km in 24 hours. They avoided toll booths and chose roads without surveillance cameras.
We deployed police officers with technical expertise separately and examined the recordings from about 1,000 surveillance cameras along routes including Salem-Madurai and Salem-Coimbatore. We also checked and investigated the vehicles that had traveled on the roads.
In this case, we caught and questioned Abhishek (21), who is from Coimbatore and had been hiding in Thanjavur. 323 kg of silver ornaments were seized from him. Abhishek has cases of murder and robbery against him. Four more people connected to this robbery incident — Sridhar, Arunkumar, Gnanaprakasam, and Annamalai — have also been arrested. We are searching for the remaining silver ornaments that were stolen, as well as a few more people involved in the robbery. He said this.
