On October 29, nine fishermen set out from Chennai’s Kasimedu harbor for deep-sea fishing in a mechanized boat owned by Selvalagan, led by driver Surya (49), along with Kuppan (48), Mohan (47), Murugan (48), Kuppusamy (58), Aravind (40), Narayanan (57), Rajesh (52), and Vijayakanth (44).
While they were fishing near Nizampatnam in Andhra Pradesh, a cyclone warning was issued, and the boat was anchored at the harbor. However, on November 3, it is said that they set off toward Ramayapatnam without informing the authorities. At that time, the boat got caught in rough seas, and its engine suddenly malfunctioned and stopped working.
Although the Coast Guard was informed immediately, by then the boat had been swept away by the force of the waves, and all contact with the nine people on board was completely lost. With no information even after three days since the fishermen went missing, more than 200 angry relatives laid siege to the Fisheries Department Assistant Director’s office in Kasimedu. This brought traffic in the area to a standstill. Police rushed to the spot, held talks, and assured that immediate action would be taken, following which the protest was called off.
Meanwhile, the search for those who went missing has begun. It is in this context that the bodies of five Chennai Kasimedu fishermen who went missing after being caught in the middle of the sea during Cyclone Murasu have washed ashore along the Andhra coastline. In a post on X regarding this matter, Opposition Leader Udhayanidhi Stalin said, ``I was deeply saddened to learn that the bodies of nine Chennai Kasimedu fishermen who went missing after being caught in the middle of the sea during Cyclone Murasu have washed ashore along the Andhra coastline. I extend my condolences and sympathies to the families who are suffering from the loss of those fishermen brothers.

Even after informing the local Choblangi government about the fishermen going missing, no action was taken to rescue them, say the relatives of the deceased in tears. Who allowed the fishermen to go out to sea during the storm? If the fishermen had gone to sea earlier, the government should have ensured their safe return by contacting them through wireless devices. How did it fail?
I strongly condemn these rulers for showing such negligence as to toy with the lives of fishermen who risk their own lives to make a living. In this incident, the government should provide even more compensation than what has already been announced to the families of the fishermen who lost their lives. Appropriate measures must be taken to ensure that tragedies like this do not happen again. Most importantly, I urge that it be ensured that every fisherman who goes out to sea has life insurance." he noted.
