The central government has imposed a limit that no more than 30 percent profit may be made on the maximum retail price of 137 cancer medicines.
In this regard, a press release issued by the Union Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers on Saturday stated: A limit has been set on how much profit can be earned from selling 137 cancer medicines that are not under price control.
With the objectives of preventing profiteering through those medicines, making cancer treatment affordable, and ensuring easy access to cancer drugs, the National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA) has revised the profit margin for those medicines.
70% price reduction...: Under the Directorate General of Health Services, based on a list recommended by leading cancer doctors, medical experts, and government officials from hospitals across the country, the NPPA has imposed a cap stating that no more than 30 percent profit may be made on the maximum retail price of 137 cancer medicines.
Through this measure, the maximum retail price of those medicines is expected to come down by up to 70 percent. The details of the medicines included in this list will be updated and released from time to time.
Effective Nov. 9: Following the publication of the official gazette notification on Saturday (Oct. 17), all drug manufacturers must inform the NPPA of the revised price details of those medicines within 7 days from that date. The price will come into effect from Nov. 9.
Should be published on websites...: Pharmaceutical manufacturing companies must publish the revised price list on their websites. That price list must be widely distributed by the manufacturing companies to all retailers and hospitals.
From Nov. 9 onward, retailers and hospitals must sell those medicines at the lower price; in addition, they must display the revised price at their pharmacies in a way that everyone can see. Consumers can find out this price through the DTHHMH NHDTN EHHM app and the NPPA website.
Since cancer medicines are supplied in large quantities directly to hospitals and medical institutions, it is the responsibility of hospitals and medical institutions to ensure that those medicines are sold at reduced prices from Nov. 9.
State drug control authorities will take the necessary steps to ensure that manufacturers, wholesale and retail drug sellers, hospitals, and other medical institutions comply with this profit margin measure.
It has been stated that this profit margin measure is expected to provide significant relief to many patients and their families, who face a heavy financial burden due to the high cost of cancer treatment.
