The second phase of the 2027 census is likely to begin in Delhi on January 10 next year. Accordingly, before the house-to-house enumeration begins on January 25, people will be given 15 days to register their details on their own, officials said on Thursday.
The period for self-registration of details will be from January 10 to 24. This will be followed by fieldwork (direct enumeration) from January 25 to February 28. A review round is planned from March 1 to 5.
Regarding the census, a senior official said, “A meeting will be held on Thursday under the chairmanship of the Delhi Chief Secretary to discuss this second-phase work with census officials,” he said.
The 2027 census is being conducted in two phases. This includes the pre-census house listing and housing census work. This schedule and questionnaire are part of the preparations for the nationwide census.
In the first phase of the 2027 census work, which concluded in Delhi on June 14, about 76 lakh houses and 55 lakh families were counted. Officials said that in this, enumerators recorded that the number of people who normally reside in Delhi has crossed 2.3 crore.
In this part of the census, people will have to answer 40 questions on various aspects. This includes details about caste. After the 1931 census, caste-related details are being collected again only now. In addition, questions about religion, parents’ details, migration, education, and occupation are also included.
This census questionnaire asks for personal details such as name, gender, date of birth, age, and marital status. It also requests information on nationality, religion, Scheduled Caste or Scheduled Tribe status, disability, mother tongue, and other languages known.
Respondents will be asked for details about their educational qualifications, employment status, occupation, industry of work, and type of worker. Questions on migration include place of birth, last place of residence, reason for migration, and duration of residence at the current location.
Details related to family and finances are also asked here. This includes details such as the number of children, the number of bank accounts, and mobile number, Aadhaar number, voter ID card, or passport details. Aadhaar and other identification details will be asked only if they are available. Providing the Aadhaar number is not mandatory; it is optional. According to the scope of the proposed census, the questionnaire also includes questions about the parents’ date of birth and place of birth.
