Chennai: The 158th birth anniversary of the ‘Father of the Nation’ Mahatma Gandhi was celebrated yesterday. On behalf of the Tamil Nadu government, Legislative Assembly Speaker J.C.D. Prabhakar and Ministers N. Anand and P. Venkataramanan paid tribute by garlanding the statue of Gandhi and showering flowers on his portrait at the Government Museum complex in Egmore.
Those who participated in the event included Tamil Development and Information Department Secretary V. Rajaraman, Director of the Department of Information and Public Relations A. Arun Thamburaj, and District Collector S. Malathi Helen.
Governor R.V. Arlekar paid tribute to the statue of Gandhi located in the Governor’s Mansion complex in Guindy by placing a garland on it and showering flowers on the portrait.
Chief Minister Vijay paid floral tribute to Gandhi’s portrait at the Koyambedu bus terminus.
Minister A. Vijay, Tamilan Parthiban, Government Chief Whip Sabarinathan, Chief Secretary M. Saikumar, Transport Department Secretary I. Nirmalraj, and others took part in the event.
On behalf of the Congress party, Tamil Nadu Congress president Manickam Tagore, Higher Education Minister P. Viswanathan, and Su. Thirunavukkarasar, K.V. Thangabalu, and others paid tribute by garlanding the statue of Gandhi at the Egmore Museum.
AMMK deputy general secretary G. Senthamizhan and treasurer Karikalan paid tribute by garlanding the statue of Gandhi at the Gandhi Mandapam in Guindy.
At the Communist Party of India headquarters in T. Nagar, state deputy secretary Na. Periyasamy paid tribute by offering flowers to Gandhi's portrait. At the DMDK headquarters in Koyambedu, deputy secretary Chandran paid tribute by offering flowers to Gandhi's portrait.
