Puducherry: In Puducherry, 1,000 police personnel have been deployed for security and traffic regulation work in view of the Diwali festival. Special patrols are also being carried out.
The Diwali festival is set to be celebrated the day after tomorrow (Nov. 8). In connection with this, the public is flocking to shopping streets to buy new clothes and other items. In addition, many people are traveling to their hometowns, while others are coming to Puducherry from outside places.
With this in mind, on the orders of the Puducherry DGP, extensive security arrangements have been made in key areas. In particular, special police personnel have been deployed in crowded areas in the city, including Nehru Street, Gandhi Street, Anna Salai, and Kamarajar Street, to control crowd congestion and prevent crimes such as theft.
1,000 police personnel have been deployed for security duty. In addition, special patrolling and vehicle checks are being carried out until midnight. Surveillance is being maintained through CCTV cameras installed under the ‘Smart City’ project.
When asked about this, Puducherry Law and Order Senior SP Kalaivanan said, “In view of the Diwali festival, one thousand police personnel from the law and order, crime, traffic, IRBN, and home guard units have been deployed for security duty across Puducherry.
In particular, special police personnel have been deployed for security duty in the city’s shopping streets. Arrangements are being regulated through loudspeaker announcements. Special patrols, mobile patrolling, and two-wheeler patrols are also being carried out until midnight 12 o’clock,” he said.
Traffic changes for 4 days
In view of the Diwali festival, traffic changes and restrictions have been implemented from today (Nov. 6) until the 9th. In particular, the routes for vehicles coming from the new bus stand and vehicles coming from the East Coast Road have been altered.
All types of heavy vehicles have been prohibited from plying on Anna Salai from Anna Square to the 45 Feet Road junction, and on Kamarajar Road from Pattinakkadai junction to GRT junction, until 4 p.m. on the 9th.
Depending on the crowd congestion where the public gathers, vehicles will be prohibited from entering Nehru Street. In the areas of Chetty Street, SS Pillai Street up to Needarajappar Street, Bharathi Street, and Mahatma Gandhi Road, all types of vehicles except two-wheelers will be prohibited from plying daily from the 6th to the 9th, between 9:30 a.m. and 11:00 p.m.
Parking spaces have been designated for two-wheelers and four-wheelers at the old prison complex on Nehru Street and at the parking area at Anna Ground on Anna Salai.
Business establishment owners should install CCTV cameras in a way that records the road in front of their shops. In addition, it is advised to avoid encroachment on the sidewalks and pedestrian pathways in front of shops.
It is also requested that motorists and those associated with business establishments remain vigilant. If any suspicious persons or objects are seen, information can be immediately conveyed to the nearest police personnel or through the control room emergency helpline number 112, the Northeast Traffic SP said.
