In Krishnagiri district, K. Papparapatti village, we visited a government-funded sports ground that was constructed and where a free 'Madhu Parag' service is operating. It was established under the Tamil Nadu Government – Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) 2024–25 plan, as indicated by the information board at the ground. This government ground, created for public use, especially for children and youth, is becoming a place for antisocial activities due to lack of maintenance and supervision, which is very distressing. When we asked the children there about this, they said, "We want to go and play, but..."
Just looking at who all are there is frightening. So, let's turn back and go home. Otherwise, we can go play at the Mariamman temple near the town square," they say. Sometimes, very rarely, some young people do come to play in that field. But due to continuous alcohol consumption and a threatening environment, even they avoid that place and go elsewhere, according to the locals. When speaking to Thangaraj, the Panchayat secretary responsible for the village, about this issue, he said, "I have filed complaints with the police many times regarding this problem. I have also brought the regional development officer here to show him the situation in person."
I have directly gone to those who are drinking and warned them, saying 'Do not drink here.' But no one listens.
