Bengaluru: Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar is keen to implement the Mekedatu dam project.
The Karnataka state government has been trying since 1991 to build a dam at a place called Mekedatu across the Cauvery River in Bengaluru South district (formerly Ramanagara). Since the Cauvery river water-sharing case was pending before the tribunal and the Supreme Court, the work for it did not gain momentum then.
Following the Supreme Court’s final verdict in the Cauvery case in 2018, the Karnataka government revived the Mekedatu project. The Karnataka government announced that it would build a dam with a capacity of 67.16 TMC at a cost of Rs. 14,000 crore over an area of about 9,000 acres. It prepared the preliminary project report for this and submitted it to the Central government.
Meanwhile, the Tamil Nadu government filed a case in the Supreme Court opposing the Mekedatu project. However, the Supreme Court refused to accept the Tamil Nadu government’s plea, saying that the project was still at the initial stage. Following this, the Karnataka government has accelerated the work of preparing the detailed project report.
For this purpose, an office has been opened in Ramanagara, and experts from the Water Resources Department are engaged in the work of identifying the dam site and preparing the map. Since the Mekedatu project falls within the jurisdiction of Kanakapura taluk, the native place of D.K. Shivakumar, who has taken charge as the Chief Minister of Karnataka, he has been enthusiastic from the beginning about the need to build a dam there. He has also met Union Jal Shakti Minister C.R. Patil and requested approval.
Regarding this, Karnataka irrigation department officials said, "The Mekedatu project is D.K. Shivakumar’s dream project. He is determined to complete it during his tenure. He is 100 percent adamant that the foundation ceremony for the dam should be held while he is the Deputy Chief Minister. Therefore, the Mekedatu issue will soon move to the next stage," they said.

கர்நாடக மாநிலம் பெங்களூரு தெற்கு (முன்பு ராம்நகர்) மாவட்டத்தில், காவிரி ஆற்றின் குறுக்கே மேகேதாட்டு என்ற இடத்தில் அணை கட்ட மாநில அரசு 1991-ல் இருந்து முயன்று வருகிறது. காவிரி நதி நீர் பங்கீட்டு வழக்கு தீர்ப்பாயம் மற்றும் உச்ச நீதிமன்றத்தில் வழக்கு நிலுவையில் இருந்ததால் அதற்கான பணிகள் அப்போது வேகமெடுக்கவில்லை.
காவிரி வழக்கில் 2018-ல் உச்ச நீதிமன்றம் இறுதி தீர்ப்பளித்ததை தொடர்ந்து, கர்நாடக அரசு மேகேதாட்டு திட்டத்தை மீண்டும் கையிலெடுத்தது. சுமார் 9,000 ஏக்கர் பரப்பளவில் ரூ.14,000 கோடியில் 67.16 டிஎம்சி கொள்ளளவு கொண்ட அணையை கட்டப்போவதாக கர்நாடக அரசு அறிவித்தது. இதற்கான ஆரம்பக்கட்ட திட்ட வரைவு அறிக்கையை தயார் செய்து, மத்திய அரசிடம் தாக்கல் செய்தது.
இந்நிலையில் மேகேதாட்டு திட்டத்தை எதிர்த்து தமிழக அரசு உச்ச நீதிமன்றத்தில் வழக்கு தொடர்ந்தது. ஆனால், இந்தத் திட்டம் ஆரம்பக் கட்டத்தில் இருப்பதாகக் கூறி, தமிழக அரசின் கோரிக்கையை உச்ச நீதிமன்றம் ஏற்க மறுத்தது. இதையடுத்து கர்நாடக அரசு விரிவான திட்ட அறிக்கை தயாரிக்கும் பணியை முடுக்கி விட்டுள்ளது.
இதற்காக ராம்நகரில் அலுவலகம் திறக்கப்பட்டு, அணை கட்டுவதற்கான இடம், வரைப்படம் தயாரிக்கும் பணியில் நீர்வளத் துறை நிபுணர்கள் ஈடுபட்டுள்ளனர். கர்நாடக முதல்வராக பொறுப்பேற்றிருக்கும் டி.கே.சிவகுமாரின் சொந்த ஊரான கனகபுரா தாலுகாவுக்கு உட்பட்ட சரகத்தில் மேகேதாட்டு திட்டம் வருதால் அங்கு அணை கட்ட வேண்டும் என்பதில் அவர் ஆரம்பம் முதலே ஆர்வமாக இருக்கிறார். மத்திய ஜல்சக்தி துறை அமைச்சர் சி.ஆர்.பாட்டீலையும் சந்தித்து அனுமதி வழங்க கேட்டுள்ளார்.
இது குறித்து கர்நாடக நீர்ப்பாசனத் துறை அதிகாரிகள் கூறுகையில்,”மேகேதாட்டு திட்டம் டி.கே.சிவகுமாரின் கனவு திட்டமாகும். அதை அவர் தனது ஆட்சி காலத்தில் நிறைவேற்ற வேண்டும் என்பதில் உறுதியாக இருக்கிறார். தான் முதல்வராக இருக்கும் போது அணைக்கு பூமி பூஜை நடத்த வேண்டும் என்பதில் 100 சதவீதம் பிடிவாதமாக இருக்கிறார். எனவே, மேகேதாட்டு விவகாரம் விரைவில் அடுத்தக் கட்டத்தை நோக்கி நகரும்” என்றனர்.
