A court in Nigeria has ordered a fine of more than Rs. 50 crore on 11 Indian sailors who were detained along with their ship for drug smuggling.
An Indian merchant vessel flying the flag of the Marshall Islands was accused of smuggling drugs (cocaine), and 11 Indian sailors were detained along with the ship.
All the Indian sailors were arrested along with the ship’s captain, Sharma Shashi Bhushan, who had tried six months ago to transport 31.5 kilograms of cocaine from the Marshall Islands to Lagos via Nigeria’s Apapa port.
Nigeria’s National Drug Law Enforcement Agency carried out the operation.
A Nigerian court today ruled that all those arrested were guilty and ordered the MV Aruna Hulya ship, which was used for drug smuggling, to pay a fine of 5.3 million dollars (Rs. 50 crore in Indian currency).
Among the convicts, three key officers were fined Rs. 95 lakh each, while the other sailors were fined Rs. 47.5 lakh each.
In addition, all of them have also been ordered to pay a fine of Rs. 7,000 each in Nigerian currency.
Nigerian anti-drug enforcement officials said this verdict has sent a strong message that Nigeria will no longer be a safe route for cocaine or any other illegal trafficking.

நைஜீரியாவின் தேசிய போதைப்பொருள் சட்ட அமலாக்க முகமை இந்த நடவடிக்கையை மேற்கொண்டது.
கைது செய்யப்பட்ட அனைவரும் குற்றவாளிகள் என இன்று தீர்ப்பு வழங்கப்பட்டு, போதைப்பொருள் கடத்தலுக்குப் பயன்படுத்திய எம்வி அருணா ஹூல்யா கப்பலுக்கு 5.3 மில்லியன் டாலர் (இந்திய மதிப்பில் ரூ. 50 கோடி) அபராதம் விதித்து நைஜீரிய நீதிமன்றம் உத்தரவிட்டது.
குற்றவாளிகளில் 3 முக்கிய அதிகாரிகளுக்கு தலா ரூ.95 லட்சம் அபராதமும், மற்ற மாலுமிகளுக்கு தலா ரூ. 47.5 லட்சம் அபராதமும் விதிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது.
அதுபோக, அனைவரும் நைஜீரிய மதிப்பில் தலா ரூ. 7,000 அபராதம் செலுத்தவும் உத்தரவிடப்பட்டுள்ளது.
