Officials said that in the first phase of the 2027 census, enumerators recorded that more than 2.3 crore people were living in Delhi.
According to the provisional data from the house listing operations, census enumerators counted 75,98,982 houses and 54,98,560 households across Delhi’s 13 districts.
This work was carried out through 45,863 house listing blocks. Each block contains about 180 houses. In the first phase, it was found that 2,30,78,796 people were living in Delhi.
Officials said this population count is temporary and is based on the first phase of the census.
The final population count will be known only after the second phase of the census, which will be held in February next year.
As for the districts, the Northeast district has the highest population, with 28,68,949 people. It is followed by the Southwest (25,00,195), West (24,42,346), and Southeast (22,70,778) districts.
The first-phase census work has revealed that 21,66,251 people live in the East district, 20,63,964 in the Northwest district, and 19,15,700 in the Suburban North district.
The population has been recorded as 17,02,900 in the North district, 11,31,599 in the Central North district, and 9,60,798 in the Central district. Old Delhi is home to 7,54,478 people, while 20,55,909 people live in the South district. New Delhi district has the lowest population, with 2,44,929 people.
The preliminary census also revealed significant differences in the number of households across districts. The Southwest district topped the list with 6,25,453 households; it was followed by the Northeast (6,13,828), West (5,89,210), and East (5,47,461) districts.
In the southeast district, 5,43,412 families were counted, and in the south district, 5,34,212 families were counted. At the same time, there were 4,65,586 families in the northwest district and 4,35,631 families in the urban north district. The north district had 3,98,447 families, and the central-north district had 2,73,669 families.
The central district had 2,44,816 families, Old Delhi had 1,63,785 families, and New Delhi had 63,050 families.
Based on the number of households, the Southwest district had the highest number of census households at 8,20,529. It was followed by the West district (8,02,589) and the Northeast district (8,04,962). New Delhi district had the lowest number of census households, with 1,02,706.
In New Delhi district, which includes the New Delhi Municipal Council and Delhi Cantonment areas, the household listing work has already been completed.

The 16th Indian Census is being conducted in two phases. In the first phase of the census, the house listing operation, a detailed list of buildings and houses was prepared, and information on housing facilities and assets was collected.
