The first anniversary of the Air India plane crash near Ahmedabad airport in Gujarat is being observed today with heavy hearts.
In the plane crash that claimed 260 lives, 241 were on board the aircraft and 19 were in the medical college hostel.
To pay tribute at the site of the accident, many family members of those who died in the plane crash have come to Ahmedabad.
The scene of the incident is still the same. There are traces of the plane having burned and the building debris stands as evidence. The relatives of the victims, unable to move on from it, continue to come there with old memories and pay tearful tributes.
How is the survivor doing?
For the families of those killed in the Air India plane crash, as they grieve in their memory, the only survivor, Vishwas Kumar Ramesh, has said that his own life is in immense sorrow. To others, I may appear to be a survivor, but no one knows the pain I endure behind closed doors every day. I cannot sleep peacefully, I keep getting sudden shocks, my mental state is not stable, and my memory is affected. He says the suffering I am going through cannot be described in words.
The injuries on the body have healed. However, he has also said that the emotional trauma caused by the plane crash is worsening.
Even a year after the accident, the area of the medical students’ hostel where the plane crashed still looks as horrific as ever. A deep silence lingers in the place where those who were with them suddenly vanished in just a few seconds.
During the plane crash, the firefighters who were engaged in controlling the fire also paid their respects today. At the time of the incident, the entire area was filled with building debris and aircraft wreckage. With thick black smoke everywhere and aircraft parts blazing on one side, it was impossible to even imagine that there were people inside.
With the situation such that anything could explode or catch fire at any moment at the scene, we searched to see whether anyone was alive. The people there also helped. Because of this, 28 injured people were quickly taken to the hospital, they say.
I Never Even Look Up at the Sky
Pragaloth Thakur, who lives in a small room with crumbling walls, is grieving the loss of his wife, Saralaben, and his granddaughter, Adhya, who were at the site where the plane crashed.
My wife and granddaughter, who were near the medical students’ hostel, died in the accident. It has been a year now, and even when a plane flies over our house, all I can think of is them, he says tearfully. Since this accident, I have never even looked up at the sky.
We were working to provide food for those staying in the medical students’ hostel. This accident happened while we were serving food to the doctors. Aadhya would always be with her grandmother. When the accident occurred, we searched for 6 days in many places, including hospitals and relief camps. In the end, we found the bodies only in the mortuary.
Something bad has happened
At the time of the incident, my son’s friend called me from London and asked whether I knew the details of the flight my son and daughter-in-law had taken, says the elderly man, Soudhampai Chaudhry. “Right then, I could tell from his voice that something bad had happened,” he says.
This call came while I was on my way back home after seeing off my newly married son and daughter-in-law at Ahmedabad airport as they boarded their flight to London. Something inside me said that something terrible must have happened. Only later did I learn that the plane had crashed.
They had only just been married. The wedding had been held on a grand scale. We have only two sons. Even as we were celebrating the arrival of a daughter in the form of a daughter-in-law, our son and daughter-in-law were taken away from us, and tears well up in my eyes as I say this.
A challenge to the police
Before we could even guess what had happened in the massive accident, many tasks had already begun. On one side, blood samples had to be collected, and on the other, the work of identifying the bodies was overwhelming. The first body of those killed in the plane crash was identified and handed over to the relatives at 8:30 a.m. on June 13, within 20 hours of the accident.
Even in a minor road accident, it takes more than 24 hours to hand over the body. But we carried out the work very quickly so that the relatives, already in indescribable grief, would not have to suffer any more. The first person was identified through DNA at 3:19 p.m. on June 14, within 50 hours of the accident, they say.
