Chennai: PMK leader Anbumani Ramadoss has urged the central and state governments to take steps to either abolish the NEET exam nationwide or grant an exemption for Tamil Nadu alone.
In a statement issued by him regarding this, "As the NEET exam, which was conducted on the 3rd of last month and later canceled due to a question paper leak, is set to be held this afternoon, I was deeply shocked and saddened to learn that, in the last 24 hours alone, a girl student and a boy student have died by suicide one after the other in Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri districts due to fear of the NEET exam. I extend my deepest condolences and sympathies to the bereaved families who are grieving their loss.
Roshni, a student from Endapatti village near Palacode in Dharmapuri district, completed Class 12 two years ago and had been trying for the past two years to clear the NEET exam and secure admission to a medical course. Her fear that the same situation might happen again this time is what prompted her to take this decision.
Similarly, a student named Vetrianandam from the Housing Board residential area in Bagalur, near Hosur in Krishnagiri district, completed the Class 12 examination and had been taking the NEET exam for the past three years.
However, unable to score enough marks in it, he took his own life this morning out of fear that the same situation might arise this year as well. This is the worst example of how the NEET exam is a test that kills students.
Already, with two students having died by suicide—Anukeerthana, a student from Coimbatore, on the 17th, and Gopika, a student from Edappadi in Salem, on the 19th—we have, in these two incidents together, lost 4 students to the NEET exam in just 4 days.
