The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention has said that, due to the spread of the Ebola outbreak in Congo and Uganda, the death toll has exceeded 200 in the past month alone.
More than 90 percent of cases in this new strain of the outbreak have been reported in Ituri, the eastern province of Congo. The infection has also spread to neighboring Uganda, where 19 people have been confirmed infected and two have died.
This outbreak has increased by up to 38 percent compared with last week. So far, 894 people have been confirmed infected, and compared with previous outbreaks, this has been recorded as the wave that caused the most severe impact at an early stage.
The Ebola outbreak currently spreading has been caused by a rare strain called ‘Bundibugyo’. Approved vaccines or proper treatments for it have not yet been identified. Likewise, ongoing internal conflicts and the geography of dense forests have made disease prevention efforts a major challenge.
The lack of sufficient funds and medical personnel to tackle this situation has further intensified the crisis. It is noteworthy that, of the $900 million pledged by countries around the world for Ebola eradication efforts, only $90 million has been released so far.
